Does anyone use them for skinning critters, are they any good? I'm thinking about getting the Torch.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Some guys use them. Personally I learned how to sharpen a knife.

I dont find them that useful as the blades really arent made to do the opening cuts well, at least not in a way that will keep the blade sharp.

You can resharpen the havalons, though it is a bit tricky to do so due to the attachment point unless you take the blade off.
Its a lot safer and easier to have a few regular knives sharp that you can use in rotation as go along.

I think the Havalon EXP looks useful. Has a tanto blade and a replaceable blade. Best of both worlds. Reviews say the regular blade comes sharp and holds an edge.

Sharpening the blade on a replaceable blade knife seems to defeat the purpose. Why not just use a regular knife and sharpen it when needed?

I didn't see that one, I'm thinking that's the one I want now!

Ability to sharpen a knife seems to be becoming a lost art.

Think cost here, the Havalon blades are really just a #22 scalpel blade yes they are sharp yes they can dull fast but the saving grace is it's a quick change to a new blade when you have a pile of fur to do and it's later in the day you will like the time saved then.

They take some getting accustomed to so don't start out on your best furs and you will cut yourself just by a slight touch, put the thing down when pulling on a hide and simple slip could become very serious in a hurry if your not careful. It take 1-2 to do a yote and figure .30 a blade so they won't break you, now how much time would it take to get that sharp of an edge on a shop knife.

They fit the Wiebe handles also so if your going to only skin with it they make replacement blades and fixed handles.

Used the bigger one on a elk a few years back scary to use in the middle of nowhere!

The advantage is you can sharpen up a pile of them during slack time, to have on hand during the busy times.

I found them Very useful for fleshing around the face, eyes, and ears of cats. Especially the blade that’s rounded off on the tip.

I love mine! Ive even used mine to skin and debone two elk Primarily using just the havolon. Don't need a big blade to process big game. Also great for skinning rats and mink which is what I primarily trap. I use it to make the opening cuts then set it down. Have a Chicago blue skinning knife I use when I get to the head since
cutting on bone /around the skull dulls any knife quickly.. can do about fourty rats using this technique then it usually gets switched out.

I should note that the Chicago blue gets sharpened every couple rats to maintain " adequate "sharpness.. just a few licks on the sharpener doesn't take long- but it's nowhere near as sharp as the razor sharp Havilon.

I carry one of those smith stones in my pocket trapping. Skin in the field most of the time. Pull the stone out and touch the little old timer right up with a few passes.
I've tried the razor knives, they are nice! just hated buying the blades when I can put an edge on a pocket knife.

I started using a havalon several years ago for both my fur skinning and taxidermy work. I now use it for almost everything I do,as cheap as the blades are and as quickly that you can change them. I see no need to spend time sharpening knives

If it take 5 minutes to sharpen a knife to that kind of edge and you sharpen it say 12 times what's a hour of your time or a extra hour of sleep worth when your running hard when you can change the blades 12 times in less the 5 minutes.

They are no good for my style of skinning. I was happy to see the one I had go on down the road. I couldn't get through one coon without dulling the blade. Re-sharped butcher shop knives and an ACCUSHARP brand sharpener is far better for skinning IMO.

Doesnt take that long to touch a knife up. Shouldnt have to do a full sharpening job on a knife, if its that far gone, I've got a 3-4 knives in rotation that I can go to till I can put time into redoing a knife.

It really only takes seconds to get the edge back on a knife. Invest in a good steel. I also like the diamond knife sharpener, dexter russell makes a good one. That being said I also use disposable blades. My knife of choice is a box cutter both straight and hook blades.

I have tried them as I had one of those things given to me but it ended up in the trash. I much rather use my regular knives ..... But then again, I sharpen new exacto blades before i use them as well.

Search for a #22 scalpel blade. Very similar to the Havalon #60 but much cheaper.

Watched a NAFA fella do a demo on putting up coon. He could sharpen a knife scary sharp with very little effort.

Thanks CoonsBane. I was looking for the #60a cause they said it was thicker. I'll check out the #22.

I had one. Not sure where it is now and don't care. With my power strop beside my skinning bench I can touch up my knife faster than I can get another havalon blade out of the pack and swap it for the old one.

I found they were awesome when the blades were new, but that razor sharpness went away fast.

Where on ebay?? Cheapest I'm finding is $30.

Edit: Never mind, I found them.

My husband and I both have a Havalon. We bought a box of 100 blades about 7 years ago and still have well over half of them left. If you run the blades through a hand held sharpener a few times, they last a while.

The Havalon blades are about 12 bucks for 12 blades but I did find the 100ct #22's for 12 bucks shipped. The knife comes with a dz, that should last me a spell I think.

Same, same really they are all built on the same scalpel platform lots of different styles of blades to choose from they all take the same size blades (of what was mentioned here) but there is a smaller size so know what your ordering,

Love mine, had it stolen when my turkey vest was taken from my truck. Replaced it immediately. Has its place like all tools.

Good advice! It comes with 12 extra blades so if I don't like it I can peel a mess of taters with it. grin

The blades it comes with are flimsy and dangerous. They like to either bend or snap with not much pressure.

I think the EXP comes with the #60a blades which are supposed to be thicker. IDK, but I'll find out.

I like mine for removing castors and oil sacks. Plus mink and skunk glands.Great for opening up otter tails. Couple of light licks on a ceramic stick and razor sharp again. I have used 3 blades in 5yrs. First blade didn't even make it through 1 coon. They will dull fast if you hit bone.

Cheaper ones (imports) will bend and brake easier then then the Havalon/Weibi brand ones they are tough to break unless they should of been changed already. Went through 100s of both kinds and both will do the job just prefer the brand name blades as they hold up better.

I’ve used them for ten years now. I first saw them used by a guide out West when caping out mule deer. I have used them to skin everything from a muskrat to a moose. Ya gotta be careful, those things can put a hurt on you quick. I ran one through my thumb ( complete pass through ) when I reached up inside a doe to cut off its windpipe. I wrapped it up with a piece of a bandana and kept hunting. In a week or so it was healed over.

Sick with the 22 and 22A they are the most popular ones, LOL a guy has to read up on the rest some are only sharp on the tip for certain applications just wanted to show the 22s really so people don't think they are all the same!

Just keep in mind when you start you will cut fur and a finger or two until you get the hang of them blades. First week I had a slice in each thumb so be careful.

I have 2 Havalons one in each shed if I had to do it again I'd get the Wiebe straight handle and not the Havalon folder no need for it to fold in the shed and if you drop the folder the handles will crack.

I use them for starting fur, like beaver. I use mostly for doing my European mounts, skinning the skulls out.

I always liked a single edge razor blade from the auto parts store (100 Pk) for beaver a guy can keep a couple in his wallet wrapped in electric tape until needed for field skinning give one a try.

The advantage is you can sharpen up a pile of them during slack time, to have on hand during the busy times.

Slack time? What is that? Catch22- get the torch. Best Havalon I have tried yet.

Ryan, I did notice that the blade lays flat on the Force but it doesn't on the EXP. Not sure how much that will effect skinning though. I really like the force but after a lot of comments about them dulling quick on bone I thought maybe the EXP would be better. But with the blades that cheap, might not be a issue. Maybe getting both is the answer. grin

You're overthinking it, lol. Buy a Havalon, then kick yourself in the butt for having waited so long to get one, and store your whetstones on a top shelf in a closet somewhere to gather dust. If by some chance you're weird like ADC and don't like it, PM me for my address.

I have the weibe and I like it alot. It's not the best for opening cuts in my opinion but the rest is great. I have a bunch of different knives and they all serve their purpose but the weibeisat the top of my list.

Coon and beaver should be opened with a hooked utility blade.

For just skinning at home, you can buy a scalpal blade for a few bucks at any farm store. No need to spend extra for the TV commercials. I have used one for years doing taxidermy work, but for regular skiinning a good knife goes a lot faster.

Iv got a havalon and only use it on skinnin rats. I tried it on coon once and didnt care for it all. I also got an outdoor edge with the replacable blades and it was awesome on coon. And I could even sharpen the blades. Then I got a cheap wiebe, one of the pink handled ones and a $5 sharpener from walmart and thats all I use to skin coon, yotes, and cats with. I really like the wiebe and when it starts to get dull, I just swipe it a few times in the sharpener and its good for another few coon, then again. I got tired of having to sharpen 10 blades a night for the outdoor edge, but it was way better than the havalon for bigger critters

The trick with the scalpel blades is to be willing to change them when need even if it was just 5 minutes ago if you cut across a dulling object the more you fight it the worse it gets. But when they are sharp you need to have good light and pay attention or you will hate them as you will cut fur and yourself over time. When pulling coon on a machine they really shine.

If you can't sharpen a knife they are sweet if you can you have choices then, me I suck at sharpening a knife! LOL
