Big part of what gets shown at fairs is what quality of animal can be bought compared to average price it will bring at the same. Sheep are going for 400 plus for a good lamb, goats are still around 250 to 300, hogs here are 300 plus for average show hogs. My son paid over 2500 for his steer 6 years ago but I know the work put into these projects. Yes some can be bought by buying an animal way above everything else that shows up to a certain fair but someone that really knows what they are doing and spends the time can take a lower animal and feed it correctly and show it up better then the one dad paid big bucks for.

At our FFA/4H type shows and sales, there is usually one buyer that will take every animal at a predetermined market price (support price). In addition to that, local ag related businesses bid above the support price as a way to show their support for the programs that get kids involved in raising the animals. Naturally, the Grand Champions get the biggest bang for the buck sorta like the NAFA Buyer Top Lot. Typically, the business is sponsoring the animal for the amount over the support price and the animal still goes to the buyer at the predetermined price. But occasionally, someone will actually buy and take possession of the animal. I have bought a steer or half a steer for the freezer a few times over the years. The show sponsors usually have someone lined up to haul the animals to a local processor for a nominal fee.

I'm gonna try meat for myself this fall. I'll keep a small herd just to keep the grass down if we like the meat. Fur will be a plus

Not speaking of fair animals. But in western Colorado the latinos will buy about every goat they can get there hands on. Pricey critter for being stinky.

If I wanted to give kids the money...I would of just gave them the cast up front and not have had to deal with all the pains involved in raising, transporting and showing the animals. One of the reasons I did not take any of the livestock projects when I was in 4-H.

Another thing on the 4-H thing is some of those kids, they never saw their animal until they saw it at the fair.
The beef show always was just a hair show. The auctions though were good for all participants, generally you would get atleast 2x market for your steer.

The goat market at fairs IS a trend. Years ago there might be 12 total. Now there is over 200 What’s changed? I know several families who showed hogs until this year, now it’s goats. And not because they like the meat, or the animal, or anything other than it’s the cool thing to do. Not one single Muslim showing goats, buying goats, or selling goats. Don’t want to think country folks are susceptible to fads? Raising goats for the fair is simply that.

Everyone chases the money. When hogs got high years ago, they had to build more pens and double up hogs in pens because everyone wanted to do hogs and the cattle barn was half capacity.

thats what stockyards do......they transport to market areas. Guarantee most of your goats are going to the latinos and muslims in indy are other large cities.

Some kids around here are in the shows completely for the money. They buy some random cattle/sheep a week before, clean it up, get whatever the bid is and they are done.

Hard to believe that most of the sheep in the West will end up in a handful of places in the East like New York, Chicago so you would think the goats will follow that same route for the same reasons. Never seen goat meat at any supermarket it has to go someplace to have any worth you would think.

Not near as many family farms around here anymore but a lot more 5 or 10 acre lots owned by folks that had some farm connection and want to expose their kids to growing plants and animals. That is a good thing IMO. It is much easier for them to raise goats or a couple of sheep under their circumstances than a steer or hogs. I am certainly in favor of exposing kids to the facts of life through programs like this. And it has certainly changed a lot during my lifetime because there are not as many farms and farm kids anymore. Farm kids raised more steers and hogs and a few sheep and a goat once in a while. Now it is mostly sheep and goats from families that are not farmers.

A couple years ago, I had a goat show up in my driveway. I thought is was from a neighbors place a half mile down the road who had goats. But it turned out to be a FFA project goat that got out of it's pen on a 3 acre lot a couple of houses down.
