Journals are one of the coolest parts of the Wilderness Forums. I figure I can't complain about the lack of them to myself if I don't participate.
Summer's been pretty slow for this guy, but we did get to try the Russian River madness.
Catch rate improved when I quit using the "Russian River fly" like Hup has said to not use on here before. That dang thing had to cost me over a dozen fish, loss decreased GREATLY when my made my own fly with a better hook.
Russian River; where you have to make a reservation to sleep on the ground, double check your change for the day parking you have to use because you didn't make a reservation, so that you can stand hip deep in the water watching poorly filleted carcasses drift by. It was a learning experience, but I think we'll try it again.
Hup, it was good to meet you in Seward! Better timing there will make for a better catch I guess.
Some of the bluberries are good in our neighborhood, we brought the bows as it was opening day for grouse and thought we'd get to try our hand at bowhunting.
Did get one camping trip in since the spring. Boys enjoyed throwing sticks on the water and shooting at them with the BB gun.
Oldest has been demonstrating good muzzle and trigger discipline, so I bought him a little single shot bolt 22...now if he's behavior would warrant getting to use it he might get a chance at a grouse!
Youngest turned one this past weekend! Cooked up a mess of caribou steak and vegetable kabobs.
My wife bought this baby thunder dome thing. Kids seemed to enjoy it.
Hopefully with daycare, kid's school, and work I'll be able to set a few traps this winter. Be safe out there!

Firstborn and I tried the Steese caribou circus on Tuesday. I hoped there'd still be a bull near the road and that most of the cavalcade would have cleared out. On both 12 Mile and Eagle Summit the fog was terrible most of the day. The air was so thick and wet my glasses made things worse. We eventually gave up on it clearing up high and found a trail down low to walk. We found fresh tracks and poo on that trail, but no 'bou.
He packed his BB gun and did take some shots at a few grouse, didn't bag any this time. I carried my rifle on my back but carried my recurve and small game arrows as well. I'm itching to pop a grouse with my bow!
He wasn't going to stay at the bottom, he wanted to get up and look around the tailing pile as well.
We were wet all day, but still had fun.
I generally avoid that hunt, but figured with wet weather on a Tuesday after the weekend that maybe I'd get lucky. There were moments when I could see blue above and hoped the sun would break in and burn off the fog, but it never happened.
Be safe out there!

Well at least you tried! I never even went. Monday was the day to go I heard. Plenty of bou to go around. I wonder if driving over into Nome cr./zone 4 would be productive? mt
I may give it a shot next days off, we'll see. We had a good time, but Oldest is in school now, I think 2nd born can hack a day trip. Ought to at least find some berries, maybe get a crack at a bear or grouse.

Came across some grouse on the way back from school. Didn't have any "tools" in the car, but they were waiting for us when we got back.
Poor kid made a great heart shot on one, but the BB gun didn't have the steam to get through the feathers. I tried to tell him pop them in the noggin, but he wouldn't listen or missed. I got him a single shot 22, but not going to use it in the neighborhood.
I did manage to knock one out of a tree with my bow!
Moose season is just over a week away, hoping to get one with the bow.
Be safe out there!

Another good year for my family! We borrowed a big 24x48 to put the 35 Swamprunner on, hauled a trapping rig up river for a friend, and too much of our own crap to go hunting! But we pulled through, went further than other boats were going, and brought home the meat! Then I take the kids out every chance I get, and the oldest gets his first harvest!

Nice work Temple. Glad you are getting out and taking those boys too. You have a couple real hard workers there and it's a pleasure to see them growing up doing the things we love and learned to do instead of the worthless tasks they are teaching our young children today. Keep it up...

Shucks, I just try to keep them a little bit feral. Makes it difficult for Momma in the house sometimes, but they do need to learn to clean up after themselves so they're not losing everything like they're daddy.
2nd son put a stalk on a rabbit near the house.
Even though the river's are high and the grayling aren't biting well, we try. It's just fun to be out, and the bows or 22 now rarely get left behind.
Pulled a few beav with the boys, they managed to stay dry! Paddling in concert is another story, but they got time to learn.
