In one of I believe Russ Carmen’s books(or Dobbins, can’t remember which), he talks about how he would stake a hollow bone or something along what he thought was a travel way and use a scent that would cause the predator to defecate, allowing him to identify what type of critter visited. Does anyone have any idea what these scents might be?

Dobbins. And I have wonder about that myself. I've keep my ears open as to what odor that would be and haven't got the answer.

One year we predug a few deep but narrow dirthole and poured them full of bacon grease and fish frying oil. The locations we're all dug up when we checked them over next couple weeks. Tracks and droppings nearby each showed a lot of different species visited those holes, including coyotes and foxes. Also had a ton of coons and possums, too

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I've noticed this spring that just down wind of a catch circle where a female that had just recently weaned her young was caught I had another yote coming in every night and dropping scat.

He got closer and closer as the days went on until he eventually dropped scat right on the trap lever of the set I set down wind.

I was using tainted love by Andy Weiser and some urine at the scent post, but maybe the urine or scat from the female made him drop the turds. Can't be too sure but it may be a good bet to try and collect glands, bladders, and urine from females in the spring to test it out.

Here are the pics I have from that set. That turd couldn't have been placed any better. The tainted love was 4-5 inches to the right of the turd and I'm pretty sure the yote had his left paw directly on my trap jaw.

These might be easier to see.

At our Rondy this weekend, John Nolan showed how he uses a 1" wooden dowel with vet wrap on the top for a lure holder. He then drills a hole in the bottom of the dowel and attaches a cable and disposable stake so the coyote can't remove the stake or pull it out (Andy Weiser did the same thing with a calf hoof and a white bone). With a good lure on top, I can only imagine all the tracks a coyote would make trying to get that stake out of the ground.

Dobbins is the one who came up with idea as means to identify population densities of K9s in his preseason scouting. It's not meant to lure an to a specific area where you plan to make a set later.

John told me I should do that with my left over cat feet. I plan on trying it this season
