I skin and will put up rats and beaver in the basement.Seeing that I make my Moundmaster beaver lure in the basement-my family is used to castor smell in the house. When my daughter would open the door, when she got home from college--she would always say--smells like I'm home. One time my sister in law came in the door, she asked my wife -what that smell was.My wife replied--smells like money to me. Others may not love castor like I do--LOL.Best smell on earth. Tom

As long as you don't have high humidity your good in a basement. Scrape your fur clean and there will be little or no smell from drying fur, unless you dry a lot all at once. The biggest drawback of processing fur in a basement is hauling carcasses up and down stairs. If you can skin and scrape in the garage and just dry in the basement you'll be stylin.

I do most of my skinning elsewhere but do all my fleshing and put up in my basement. I have a dehumidifier and keep a fan running when I have pelts in process.

I put up beaver in my basement in the winter months.

I have to draw the line at skinning. But I use my basement to dry Peltz. And yeah there's an odor. But it's not much by my standards. I skin and flesh and do everything else in my uninsulated two car garage. I use a space heater

Man it all stinks don't think I'd want that in my house people walk in my fur shed and their eyes get as big as dinner plates! LOL
Think I'd get an old lawn barn shed and run power to it and a heater that would save you a lot of grief.

I put up all my furs in the basement since I trap,I skin and all in the basement included skunks and any thing else. When it is too cold out side to do up a deer that would be done also in the basement. Also did the cleaning of chickens also after taken the feathers off. I use the heat from the furnace that heat the house and a fan to help dry the furs.If someone complain about the smell they know where the door is.

Funny how there are threads every year about controlling fleas, etc. Then we get a thread about, how to introduce fleas/lice into your home. I do not worry about fleas ect. .as long it is not on my coydog I do not worry about it.I do put flea and tick control on him.
