If I have this right, with bases loaded, the third baseman got a grounder, stepped on third for the force out of the runner from second to third; making third base an open base which meant the runner who had been on third could come back and stay there safely, but he stepped/fell off third and was tagged for the second out; then the throw to second should have been a force out at second for the runner from first, right?

So why did they (need to) try to tag out the runner from first to second? Did the second baseman with the ball step on second base before he ran toward the runner coming to second? Wasn't it a force out at second for the guy running from first to second? Were they just confused because they didn't know if the hit was a grounder or caught as a fly ball?

Looks to me like they did more work than needed for the triple play, whether it was a grounder (which replay shows it was) or would have even if it had been a caught fly ball.

Swifty yup you got it right. I think there was a little confusion at the play at and on 3rd that's why the 2nd baseman went after the 1st base runner. A little extra effort to ensure outs are made and scores aren't is a good thing.

I hope Rickyno5 sees this and chimes in.

Absolutely right about the confusion. Without the benefit of getting to see the replay a few times, I would have thought it was caught as a fly. Nothing wrong with doing more than hindsight shows is necessary, because you don't get the replay/hindsight until it is over, then it's too late to change it. I guarantee I would have messed it up somehow.
