Buddy stopped by yesterday and we were talking about trapping this coming season and he says he won't trap cats down next to me where I trap cats at this year because it cost him too much? (55 mi one way) So I said if your not going down there get me in there and he could have it back anytime he wanted it no problem.

He's not going and I am but I would not take his place away from him I just would not do it but it would allow me to run a few more traps for cats and yotes for gas I'm already burning. Won't take his spot, I'm going that way already, it's in a huge area and not enough land to trap to hurt the population in any way. Was that out of line in any way?

Sounds reasonable to me. Unless he is afraid you won't give it back.
If that isn't the case,I would think he should let you in.

absolutely not since he told you he's not going to trap it. I don't even know you and I'd take you at your word you'll stay out when he wants back in.

He barrowed traps for cats last year and when he tried to pay me in essence for using them, I gave him the traps to keep for the essence so he should know I would not screw him. LOL

He gave me essence a few years ago said it was about 8oz it was 12oz so I asked him to stop by and paid him for it.

I had that on two beaver spots last year, my buddy was building a house and did not have time to trap for the farmers so he asked me to. Now one of the farmers wants me back this year instead of the other guy..... I told the farmer I would not do it........

If you guys have known each other for a long time, he should have be able to judge how trustworthy you are. It sounds like your friend is a stand up man. We should count urselves lucky to count such people as friends.

I have a few friends I would trust with my life and a few acquaintances who cant't even be trusted by their wives.

Might of just been a knee jerk reaction maybe I will let him process it for a bit and see where it goes from there! I have about 600 acres on my side of the road and that would give me about the same, of that maybe 30% is prime cat country it's literally across the road from where I'm at and 1/3 of a mile down that road. LOL

From where he's at the river breaks go for miles around him with no public roads in the area just thick cedar draws and rough cat country. Last year was his first year chasing cats and he did get 2 cats.

When you posted this I took it as a big ranch. I picture West River as ranch country. The guys I know have big chunks of ground. LLL

His pasture is on the other side of the road that I was talking about but his main ranch is on my side of the road with his cattle and big dogs so that pasture is the prime spot for cats by it's location. Very thick cedar river breaks with a pasture running down the middle with draws cutting across I places to funnel cats through the area. He also winters a lot of wild turkeys there so it's a cat magnet.

I think you are both doing the right thing. This way no stranger gets in that spot and you are keeping it for your friend when he has time to trap it again. Once a strange guy gets in there, you buddy may be out of it for good. Win Win situation like this in my book.

This is the other neighbors just over from where I trap cats. That's a couple of big ranches and some great cat country!
