My daily walk on my PA coyote line takes me about 1 1/2 hours. This year I want to use a backpack which is quieter and more comfortable than a pack basket. I'd like to make sure I have what I need for remakes, and for stuff for one new set. I'll need another trap, driver, dirt, etc. How do you keep remake tools, gloves etc separate in this scenario and have what I need while keeping weight in backpack reasonable? Thanks for your help.

I have never trapped Coyotes out of a backpack but I have done a decent out of backpacking during the summer and I usually run a good portion of my raccoon line with one. I would take advantage of the different compartments and some nice sturdy freezer bags.

the big thing that you are going to have to focus on is keeping your bait and your traps separate. The soil can be placed in a couple one gallon freezer bags depending on how many since you have.

If you can find something such as a type of a canteen with a handle that you could clip on the outside of the backpack for your bait that might be a good idea. I'm not sure about anybody else but it seems like no matter how careful I am with a bait it always seems to get smeared on whatever container or area of the backpack that I'm storing it in, whereas if you had it inside a different container outside the backpack it might be easier.

One little tip that may save you some headaches is to put some cardboard on the bottom of the pack since the stakes or sharp edges will easily puncture the bottom.

Put your dirt in milk jugs, and stash a few of them in different places along your line. That cuts down on a lot of the weight just by itself unless you are using peat because it doesn’t weigh anything. I don’t see the need to carry a driver and a hammer every day just in case you need it. The extra trap, maybe, just in case you have a damaged trap. On my walking lines though, I don’t carry anything that isn’t necessary for a remake. If I make a catch, I remake the set and if I want to add a trap outside the catch circle, I bring one with me the next day with the hammer and driver. I usually make at least 2 sets anyhow so there’s a fresh set besides the remake there already. I usually only add the trap outside the catch circle if I make a coyote catch. I don’t seem to have problems getting a coyote to come inside the catch circle and work the set unless it’s a coyote remake. You might play around with a tool belt for walking your line instead. I can carry weight around my waist easier than I can on my shoulders. I broke my shoulder in high school though in a go kart racing accident that should have probably killed me. For no more than what you need to carry for remakes, you could probably make a tool belt work pretty easily. You just have to make it fit your style. I have done construction my whole life though so I just might be a little partial to wearing a belt.

What I do/ carry in my backpack & military duffle bag. Part of my line is hike in only.

Water bottle
1-4 traps
Hammer, pliers
Sifter
Gloves
Lure bait and urine. Experience taught me keep in zip lock. In the small pockets in the front.
Extra quick connects, stakes & cable
Knife 1+
Lighter 1+
Big items go in the big pockets everything else goes in small pockets. Cables and stakes use a carabeaner(spelling).
Snack
Emergency blanket
2 trash bags for skunks only.

Using a duffle bag gets tricky and zip locks go a long way, but makes carrying animals out a breeze.

Forgot 2 important things: toilet paper and extra shells for whatever gun you are carrying.

Thanks guys some really good suggestions. I do stash some waxed dirt out on the far end of the line when I'm doing preseason scouting and hiking to stay in shape maybe I'll put a couple traps out there too. Yes carrying catches out I hope to be easier with the back pack.

A GPS is priceless on any trap or snare line to mark not only set locations but and traps and other equipment left out along the line. Just in case something happens a medical emergency or you get sick, someone can check your line for you.
I hope it doesn't ever happen to you but it did to a friend of mine.
Stay Safe out there !
Allan

Skinning gloves, or flea spray and garbage bag if you are hauling the whole animal. Water is always good to have with you.
I read an old article in hunter trader trapper on this one time and the writer had two canvas bags he made - one for clean and the other for dirty traps. Maybe a similar thing would work in a pack?
Or just always take one set of tools and clean them if you have a remake?
I like zip lock bags for fur. It's easy to toss them in the freezer if you aren't handling them right away. It keeps them clean and organized. I also keep a couple old plastic grocery sacks in my pack - they come in hand for lots of things. So does a leatherman style tool.

Just passin through

I like to have lineman pliers with the wire cutter , spare j hooks ,j hook opener , spare quick links and a small crescent wrench to tighten them (while getting a good grip on them with the pliers when they are really seized up) and a couple of pairs of nitrile gloves to handle skunks so no stink on my hands to contaminate everything in the pack that you touch . Also whatever tools (s) I might need to readjust the pan tension at a remake after the trap gets beat on .
