Roy, I take pine cones that are opened up, wrap string around them and dip them in my old melted wax. They light easy (light the string) and they burn for 5-6 minutes. I use them in the fur shed to get the fire going.

I put chainsaw chippings in a waxed cupcake paper, and pour a tablespoon of smoking hot melted paraffin wax in it. Will burn for a very long time. Planer shavings work great too if you're lucky enough to get ahold of some.

I've always just used shavings off a pine knot but those sure would come in handy when a pine knot couldn't be found.

Man I've not seen a pine knot in many years. Picked em up by the wagon loads when I was kid back in Louisiana. Lots of pine there. I have a wood shop so have access to wood shavings. I do the paper egg cartons and wax trick for my starters.

When I worked in Alaska we used to always keep a roll of detonation cord to start ours in the field, burned great for a good while, throw some birch peels on there and you got a blaze in a minute or two

Take a ziplock sandwich bag and stuff it full of lint from the dryer and squeeze all the air out. It doesn't take up much room. It lights with a spark and burns long enough to get kindling burning.

those look nice , but for my wood stove it is junk mail and a short burst with the propane torch to lite the mail.
dry wood and a stove with 22 feet of strait up chimney above it it drafts very well so well that I split some stuff to about he size of 2x2 and 2x4 for starting fires but no smaller.
go through about one 3 dollar bottle of LP ever other year.
and I don't have to deal with those sorry excuses for a match they sell now.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Vaseline and cotton balls for me but what you did will work well. Well yes , but what do you use as a fire starter.

I've always just used shavings off a pine knot but those sure would come in handy when a pine knot couldn't be found. I got enough lighter knot in my backyard I collected over the years I could melt the North Pole! Wife laughs at me but I use it a lot! Always got some in all my kits/packs/ camping gear. Got some cut too "matches" and some small hand size blocks for shavings! J

Flint and Steel...char cloth ..Tow...and birch bark. Or a .357 case filled with pine sap works wonders with a match

When I worked in Alaska we used to always keep a roll of detonation cord to start ours in the field, burned great for a good while, throw some birch peels on there and you got a blaze in a minute or two Det cord (PETN) does burn well, and RDX with a plasticizer makes C-4, which also burns well. However, be careful of the toxic fumes they produce.

I use cardboard egg cartons, dryer lint & old sented cube wax from the melter in the house. Cut into 12 pieces starts fires in the fur shed. Same. The egg carton is really just to hold the lint though. Dryer lint works great in about any configuration, especially waxed. I’ll probably make some in TP tubes now.

We have a little container sitting on the dryer. Wife puts lint in it for us to save for fire starter. Pretty cool how easy it catches... Just a spark is all it needs. Mike
