Many years ago I bought a Rocky mountain fleshing knife and have used it ever since. It is still in great shape and still works great, matter fact every one tries to seal it LOL. Some years ago I saw on here a knife that looked just like the RM and talked the gentlemen that made it. I want to retire my RM but want the same style knife. Does anyone have an idea who made those knives.

How about a photo of your Rocky Mountain knife, we might be able to help you then.

Rocky Mountain Wildlife products of Laport,Colorado sold a knife that fits your description.
I bought one many years ago also, really like it. I think Lee S on here makes one similar, but not sure.

Get ahold of Lee Steinmeyer on here, I'll bet his knife will be what you are looking for.

I too liked the Rocky Mountain fleshing knife and used it for many years because I couldn't find another knife that worked like it did. That was until I tried the Post fleshing knife. No comparison, the Post is a much better and lighter knife. So I think by retiring it you will find there are some better knives out there now.

If you like the style then go with Lee's fleshing knife as stated above. Actually Lee's standard knife was what Rocky Mountain copied from what I understand. I could be wrong but that's what I was told years ago. Don't overlook Lee's parallel knife it's comparable to the Post.

Yep one of Majors. My grandfather made them for him. He had a welding/ blacksmith shop when we first moved to Fort Collins in about 83. Major and my grandfather hit it off and we did a lot of welding for him. I have one of the first ones, that I use all the time. My gramps passed away in 2005. My little brother and I worked for Major for about 7 years and he is the one I learned how to trap beaver from. I try and go see him whenever I get down that way. I know my grandfather is still smiling down knowing something he help build is still being used.

Your grandfather made mine then, I think it was the early to mid 80's that I bought it from Major, I will most likely get one of lee's standard knives, but I am going to look at the post fleshing knife first. Then again maybe I will just keep using my RM. I am just so use to using the RM that the others just do not feel right. I keep my RM very sharp, most folks take my knife and rip the hide in two the first time using it. Then they try to seal it lol

I have one that I've had for years; looks exactly like the one in the picture. Best one I've ever owned.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Just a bit of history. I sold Major the first dozen, when he decided to expand into the fleshing knife business. He never bought any more, and I knew someone else was building them, but never heard who untill about six years ago. They were an exact copy of what I used to build, but I had fur buyers that had troubles with the way the handles were attatched, so I changed mine to the way they are now. Never had an issue since. Seems most fur buyers hired people to scrape for them that have arms like my thighs! They could rip a 5/16 lag bolt right off! Most trappers never had an issue, the way they were built.

I am fairly sure I bought mine in the late 1980's, probably from the (now defunct) Colorado Fur Company in Fort Collins, CO.

I wish now I knew what year I bought the knife. looks just like the picture. I know it was between 80 and 85. So it could have been lee made it or Jmack's grand father. Lee was there any markings on yours that would not be on the other company's? or any way to tell yours from the other company. Not that it matter other than history of my knife and being able to pass that on to my grand sons. Mine does not have a hole in the blade
Also lee other than the handle is the knife close to the same as the one I have?

I vaguely remember the new one having the Rocky Mountain Fur Company being stamped on it.
