Just back from Colorado where it is pretty dry. I emptied my rain gages of 1.5" of rain that must of fell last week. Overnite I have received another 2.75" of rain. And it's pouring now. I think the forecast calls for the possibility of another 3" to 5" by the middle of the week. And it even stormed so hard they had to cancel Nebraska's home football opener ( many couldn't figure out why Scott Frost couldn't over rule God on the weather, I really could care less). The soybeans really lodged with the winds and heavy rain. Looks like we will have a wet September..... now anyway. How is it in other parts of Trapperman Land??

We've had an inch and a quarter within the week, but that's it for several months here. Creeks are dried right up.

Went to Lennox last week and the area along Hwy 44 just reeked of that swamp smell with duck weed pretty thick on the sloughs so they have been wet for a while now. Been steady moisture in central SD but not that much rain it's been green all summer very rare in these parts.

It has been a strange and unusual year here for us in our small locale. Very dry winter with very little snow and deep frost. Then a wet spring with the big ice and snow storm in April and delayed planting. From about late May into July quite to very dry. We have now had 3 stretched of 2-3 weeks of dry weather with a week or so of monsoons rains in between. Our little spot has received about 23 inches which is typical for our growing season, April to October or 150 days but 20 inches of that rain fall came in 3 5-10 day stretches. We have had a lot of humidity the last couple months which has moved the lat planted crops along quickly. Crops look good even with the variable weather. Sloughs have dried up 3 times this year but now are pretty full again so maybe the rats have stayed.

We get about 1-3 inches every 7-10 days it seems like, but it was so dry we get very little runoff we need a good 2-3 day 7-10 inch of rain to get any real water built up here.

The Swan Creek that starts around Milligan (north fork) and also around Daykin (south fork) and runs to Dewitt where it dumps into the Turkey and then the Big Blue is running bank full this morning. Really don't want any more big rains. But I looked at a local weather forecast for the week, calling for a possible 1.5" rain daily for the next 4 or 5 days. If that is true there will be some lowland flooding around Swanton and Dewitt. The creek runs just about 25 yds behind my cabin. I set on a high spot but you always keep in the back of your mind "What If". I seen where a tropical storm in coming in the gulf. In the past if things all fell into place with a storm in the gulf, we could be in for a very wet week or two. Hope we don't get any 12" or 15" overnite rains. I've seen that before..... scary!!

At 3 A.M. the weather alert radio is going off. Flash flood warnings for Lincoln, Beatrice, Fairbury...Heavy rains in some areas. Radio said over 5" since last nite. I went out and looked at my gage and it has almost another 3". I seen where there was bad flooding down by Manhatten Kansas. There are supposedly some bridges washed out somewhere in that area of Kansas. My creek is still in it's bank. I bet it won't be come sun up.
