Literally hundreds and hundreds flying around the yard and creek. A swarm is more accurate. Never seen anything like it. Any one know what’s up? Obviously something in their life cycle but what??

We had them in the yard like that a few years ago. I wondered if a bunch had recently hatched??? Pretty cool whatever the reason.

True dragon flies are a predator who hunts flying insects and they do take lots of mosquitos if available. The nymphal phase lives in water for up to three years before the adult form emerges, lives for a fairly short time, breeds and dies. The flying adults have a spoon like lower jaw that is hinged in the middle with which it grabs prey. If a pack is hunting in your yard, you can listen and hear the jaw clicks as they snap smaller insects out of the air. The pack will likely pass on as they clear the area of food.

We have them like that when there is a Flying Ant hatch, they pick them off. Pretty cool to see!

When they swarm here so do the swallows chasing them. It's fun to watch.
