Did a perfect stalk on a big moose on sunday morning. Got within twenty feet or so. The big bull moved about forty feet away from me and I calmly aimed and fired only to miss. I couldn't figure out what went wrong until we reviewed video taken by my hunting partner. In slow motion you can see the bullet and then watch it drop about halfway between me and the bull. anybody seen this before? The bull was 70+ inches just to give an idea of the frustration. I haven't tried firing any ammo from the box in question since that incident.

Yes new box. All marked 270. Im thinking undercharged like sniperBBB suggested. Monster coastal moose and best of all the rut is not started at all. Wouldve been A1 quality meat. What bugs me the most is that I took 4 shells out of my gun and replaced them with the ones from the new box before we started getting all sneaky like.

Sorry to hear about the moose, that stinks, to say the least. I had a rifled slug shotgun shell do that to me once. I attributed it to a light powder charge at the factory. The other shells in the box were fine., but that one cost me some venison.

did the recoil feel very very weak? like a 22 rimfire?
40 feet is very close even a half load of powder would get it there.
I have had kids put a patched round ball down on with no powder and get about what your saying from just a 209 primer.
if it had recoil and noise like a normal round , it wasn't undercharged so much as to make it drop in 40 feet that would make me thing undersized bullet some howl like a 270 in a 30-06.
if your shooting a 270 it would take 6.5mm to be small enough to fit down the bore in a similar way to a 270 in a 30-06

The recoil was less than usual and the sound was more of a pop than the usual deep sound of a 270. Sure made me mad but Im glad we seen the bullet miss and not hit the moose at lower power.

twenty feet away at one point but then it moved off another 40 or so making for about 60 feet total. Wish I had my bow for sure. I loved the feeling of being that close to such a massive animal, he had no clue we were there. Im trying to shake it off but its a tough one. Replayed it in my mind a thousand times. Nobody got hurt and no equipment was damaged so I guess it could've been worst.

Yes a bow would of been sweet for sure nothing like being that close to a huge critter in the wild, we called a nice bull elk into that range I was awestruck by it's size, plays like a loop in my head like you say, tough to take for sure.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

if a 277 projectile cleared the barrel I think it had more than just the primer , just a primer seems unlikely , more likely a light charge but more than just a primer.
just a primer typically sticks the bullet in the barrel
