I was paving a county road, the plant operator called and said I needed to shut things down and get to a radio to hear what was going on.
Never could have imagined what was going on.. Sad day that was.

I was moose hunting in Jackson Hole. I didn't hear about it for another nine days. I went to Jackson and while grocery shopping a cashier asked me if I wanted to donate money to the folks in NY city. I said "Well I don't think so". On the way out of the store I saw a newspaper box that was talking about the attack.

I was on a plane that morning.
I had flown home to MN for my friends wedding and my ex-wife and I were headed back to WA state where we were both stationed. We took an early morning flight from Minneapolis to St Louis where we were set to take a connector up to Seattle. Our flight from Minneapolis was uneventful, and we managed to board the plane in St Louis and were about to take off when the pilot said that our flight was delayed a few minutes, but never eluded to why. A few minutes later the pilot announced that the delay was going to be a little while and we could get off the plane and re-board when we received the go ahead to take off. A minute or two later the pilot came back on and said everyone needed to get off the plane and head to baggage claim, as the flight was canceled.
Still uncertain as to what was going on, we disembarked the plane and found the airport a jumbled mess. People were running everywhere and panic was in the air. Keep in mind this was before smartphones so the only real news we got was when we passed by an airport television. I still remember a middle aged lady scrambling through the airport frantically yelling that America was under attack. I somehow reached a phone and was finally able to get ahold of my command to tell them that I was probably not going to make it back from leave on time. I was told my leave was extended for however long I needed and to be safe in getting home. My ex-wife's command gave her the same answer.
We eventually made it to baggage claim to try and collect our bags. While there I struck up a conversation with an older lady who lived in St Louis. She was on her way to Seattle that morning to visit a friend. She speculated it would take a great deal of time before our bags were ready and she said she was going to have a friend pick her up and she would come back for her car. Before she left she told us that hotels would book up fast and we could go back and stay with her until we figured out what to do.
After what seemed like eternity our bags showed up and so did the local lady. We ended up taking her up on the offer and we spent a few days with her. Each day we would anxiously listen for news of flights departing. Finally on Thursday we got word that flights may be taking off again. We were dropped off at the airport and said farewell to the friendly lady that took us in. We got in a line that stretched forever, waiting for word on a flight. While waiting, I struck up a conversation with a man that needed to be in San Francisco on Monday for a job interview and he told me he had a one way rental car reserved for that morning if he needed it. He asked if we wanted to head west with him. About that time they announced all flights were again cancelled for the day. We quickly went with the westward traveler to a map in the airport. Upon studying it we determined that we could go west as far as Salt Lake City where we could rent our own car, and we would each head off to our respective destinations.
We picked up the rental and were off. The guy told us he simply wanted help driving and expected no money from us. Later that day we gassed up in eastern Nebraska, and when I tried to pay he cut me off and insisted that we owed nothing. He said help in driving, and company on the road was all the compensation he needed.
We traded off driving as we pushed on through the evening and early morning hours. Finally around 0900 the next morning we pulled into the outskirts of Salt Lake City. A quick stop by the airport revealed that any thought of getting a flight to Seattle was useless, so we picked up a rental car of our own. We said a quick goodbye and pushed off for WA state.
Sometime early Saturday afternoon we finally reached our home on Whidbey Island, WA. The changes to security on the base were immediately evident, there was no doubt that the United States had been attacked and things would forever be changed.
It was an amazing journey and I will forever be grateful to the strangers that helped us along the way. Seems like yesterday, hard to believe it has been seventeen years.

In Northern Maine, bear hunting. Found out about it next day, when we took a couple bears to the check station. I killed a good bear the night of 9/11.

I remember it vividly.
I was under the desk of a secretary to the president of our company. I worked in maintenance and I don't remember what I was doing there. Probably fixing an electrical outlet, patching the wall, I don't remember. She had her computer on and all of a sudden said “Oh my gosh, a plane just hit a building”. We watched her computer for a few minutes. As things progressed, the company had me get a big T.V. we had and set it up in the lunch room. People were allowed to watch T.V. as long as they wanted. As more developed, the company told employees that they could go home if they wanted. Nobody was required to go back to work. You were allowed to just set in the lunch room, get paid, and watch the events unfold. I called my son and told him to turn on the T.V. I remember he said “ what channel”. I told him it didn't matter, as it was on all channels.
The next day, even though he was still in high school, he joined the Army. It was delayed enlistment and he went into the Army as soon as he got out of school.
My name ain't Keith

I was working in my office about 40 miles north of where Flight 93 went down. I listened to it all happening on the radio.

I was on a plane, just left lincoln for denver. Wife was 8 months pregnant, I had no cell phone. All heck broke loose and she had no way to get in touch. Got my very first cell phone when I finally got back home a week later! When we landed in Denver the airport was shut down. I got the very last rental and hung onto that like it was made of gold. With no planes flying that was my only way back to Lincoln later that week. I remember the long-a$$ drive back, and only song on radio over and over and over again was Lee greenwood God bless the USA. No offense to any of his fans, but not a fan myself and I just shut that off after a few times through the rotation. Security at airports after that was crazy. Jim
