I have a bunch of B&L square jaw #2 coils I bought new, back in the early 80's. I used them for fox before the coyote boom here and I've used them for mink and rats since. I want to change out the springs and use some of them for bobcats and fisher and I'm wondering if #2 music wire springs would cause too much torque on them without modifying. I'd think they'd work ok, but I thought I'd see who's done it here and how it worked for you. I don't necessarily have to use MW springs, but I'd like to if I can.

Not all music wire springs are equal. I've had them so strong they bend the levers and a guy had to stand on them to set them.

Not sure how long the pins on those traps but if long enough it's easier and cheaper to just 4 coil. Many 4 coils aren't terrible strong...just makes the trap feel like new again. Just an option...maybe.

I got some 1 1/2 victors in a trade. He said they had new springs.I took a good look before dyeing them and the jaws did not come together straight.also hard to set. I looked at my other traps and the springs looked the same size. So i did not how the Music wire springs were not equal.Well i got some old #2 coils that need help.

And not all traps can use music wire springs.

I had some older Monty SJ 1.5's that needed new springs so I put music wires on them. No matter how hard you stood on the levers they wouldn't go down far enough to set the traps.

Called MTP where I got the springs and they said to use Vic 1.5 and sent me a free pair of them to try out. They worked.

WISH I HAD MORE TIME TO TRAP!

This is what I was wondering. That and whether they may be too much for the levers and possibly the bases. I'll look into it some more and see what I can come up with. Like I said, no real need for mw springs, I'd just like to use some of them for cats and fisher.

Thanks for the replies everybody, I appreciate it.

As far as I can find out ; technically all coil springs are music wire, it's the only kind of steel that works. Marketing them is like advertising fat-free water.

JC Connors Taos Lightning springs are one of those kits that doesnt overpower a trap.

The trick Is to use just one NEW spring on your trap. Any way that's what Mr. Charles Dobbins say's In his trap tuning book.

If your changing factory springs to new Music wire springs go with the same size. Do both or just try one.
