Ratings. The worse they make it sound, the more people tune in. It's the same way with the news. It is ridiculous, isn't it? I hope they're wrong too.

I agree the news thinks they have to oversentionalize everything!! this one the Storm of a lifetime. its a cat 4 and going to get stronger!! why couldnt they report it could weaken as it neared the coast. Im sure still a big storm for the people that live there but i dont see the heavy red in the hurricane only yellow and green hope that means not as much rain as they predicted.. anyway stay safe all down there! They cry wolf so many times no one listens . Fact of the matter is they cant predict the weather no matter how hard they try. Me and the kids still laugh a few years back our first snowstorm of the year Shawn cable local meteoroligist reporting was standing on the side walk making a big deal out of it said pan down here by my feet !! showed a few flakes and said look how its building up on the sidewalk... it was melting about as fast as it was comeing down. good grief november in s dakota i predict it might snow!

Another thing that gets me, is every time there's a couple inches of snow expected here, we're under a "winter weather advisory". At one time that meant we were going to get hammered. Now is seems our average daily winter weather is a life threatening ordeal.

I agree that they tend to be idiots and try to over blow everything sometimes but I am also glad they are there for the good info that they do provide.
I have lived long enough to know that it was not always the way it is now and that was not necessarily a good thing either.
I was in elementary school in 1954 when Hurricane Hazel made landfall on the NC coast as what we call a Cat 4 now. It was a fast moving storm, moving around 30 miles per hour and the track brought the track just a few miles from my location, 180 miles from where it made landfall. We went to school the day it slammed the coast and by the time they put us on the bus to go home, it was raining sideways and the wind howling like I had never seen.
We did not get a mile before a big oak tree was blocking the road. Somehow, the bus driver managed to turn the bus around on that dirt road and got back to the main highway. She managed to get to my house on a paved road and to my Dad's country store with a bus load of kids. Several of the local farmers were at the store and they made sure that all of the kids got home that afternoon. Not sure what the wind speed was when they sent us home but we had hurricane force winds as the storm passed and lots of trees down. I am not sure the bus driver could have maneuvered through all of the down trees to get the kids home because some of the farmers had to use their chainsaws to get through with their trucks to get them home.
Point being, with all of the technology and communication we have now, that situation would not happen.

Yet the weather guy acts like he barely make headway into the wind and a guy in the background is walking by no problem!

If they underestimated it, and no one prepared, we would blame them for not warning us.

Now as far as the forecasts. Its better to say they are inaccurate. Everything is based off models, some of the better guys like Joe Bastardi at WeatherBell, use models combined with historical evidence and experience can make pretty good predictions but anything 72 or more hours out is always subject to change. Models can only take what they know and then run the data through the programming that has to take into account some assumptions. Conditions change, local geographic effects arent taken into account etc. If you watch all the model runs, things can get pretty screwey, some show Florence coming back around again after it makes it back to the ocean. Excerpt from Aliens Cause Global Warming a lecture by Dr. Michael Crichton To an outsider, the most significant innovation in the global warming controversy is the overt reliance that is being placed on models. Back in the days of nuclear winter, computer models were invoked to add weight to a conclusion: “These results are derive d with the help of a computer model.” But now, large-scale computer models are seen as generating data in themselves. No longer are models judged by how well they reproduce data from the real world— increasingly, models provide the data. As if they were themselves a reality. And indeed they are, when we are projecting forward. There can be no observational data about the year 2100. There are only model runs.
This fascination with computer models is something I understa nd very well. Richard Feynmann called it a disease. I fear he is right. Because only if you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen can you arrive at the comp lex point where the global warming debate now stands.
Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we’re asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds? Stepping back, I have to say the arrogance of the model-makers is breathtaking. There have been, in every century, scientists who say they know it all. Sin ce climate may be a chaotic system—no one is sure—these predictions are inherently doubtful, to be polite. But more to the point, even if the models get the science spot-on, they can ne ver get the sociology. To predict anything about the world a hundred years from now is simply absurd.
