Very informative read, thank you.

I had this difference in hunting styles impressed on me while following tracks in the snow. The cats had more of a tendency to hunt right through the thick stuff and I've seen where coyotes and fox too, would circle outside of the thicker areas and down wind trying to pick up scent in the thickets and slamming on the breaks and going into sneak mode when they do. I've followed their tracks to where they took a big jump and caught rabbits after all this.

Thanks again Lazarus. The info you pass along here, is much appreciated.

Great content and well written, Laz! The "arms race" metaphor is a nice way of illustrating the co-evolution of predator/prey species, especially in terms of behavior. Thank you!

One reason for their slow gait has to do with how they detect prey. Cats, and most every other predator, visually detect prey.

I have watched cats hunt. I think they also listen closely for prey sounds. They also use their nose more than most give them credit for.

Just my observation.

Thank you for sharing. I have learned a lot from your posts.

Agreed. Watch those ears when they hunt . . . they are constantly turning like radar towers, always listening for the slightest sound.

Good info. Got a bunch of bobcats on trail cam this year on a new property. Going to hit them hard this Winter, well at least try to...

Here are some examples of common patterns that I imagine cats are on the lookout for as they hunt.
