Hello everyone. I知 getting excited cause trapping season is just around the corner! I was planning on using Andy Stoes SPEED DIP and the directions say to mix it with gasoline. Will the gasoline smell stay with the traps and spook off all the critters I知 trying to catch?

I try to air dry a week before use
follow intructions on can
not enough gasoline will leave trap tacky

No, just hang them out in the weather for a week or two and the smell will dissipate.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Don't use the stuff myself, but others on here say that you should use Camp Fuel instead, and mix it thin to dry better.

New Traps??? Just Degrease and Wax them the first year.

Not a fan of the Speed dip at all. But if you decide to use it , High octane gas or camp fuel like ^ above, otherwise from my experience you will have tacky traps for a year. Weather conditions probably play a role in drying also.

I do it the old school way still, no paint or dip on my K9 traps just my preference.

Don't do it. Research it first, there are a ton of posts that it left their traps a sticky stinky mess. It's not worth the risk IMO.

I tried to warn this fella too, he got all the advice on how to make it work, but it didn't frown ...

I have used it successfully myself in the past but it's too unpredictable to trust.

I/2 to 2/3 thirds of the dip to I gallon Coleman gas. If you use a full can to I gallon gas or Coleman it may or may not dry completely leaving the traps tacky. Been using for 15 years no issues.

I'll never put it on another k9 trap as long as I live. Lesson learned...the hard way.

I didn't even like it for the water traps, now that I think about it.

I don't think gas, or really any petroleum product will bother the animals, look at how many are attracted to the blacktops.
I've set traps when I had diesel on my clothes and had first night catches. Even after the gas is gone the coating is some kind of tar isn't it? And it does work for some, so does leaving the traps rust to a patina work for some.
Maybe what we put great emphasis on is immaterial to the animals that have no ability to think and therefore can not overthink any situation.

ADC is right though, in the past there have been about equal numbers of people asking how to use it and others asking how to get it off.

In case you later want it off, the only experience I've had with it is buying some icky-sticky traps at convention and those I simply soaked in gas for a couple days, then washed with dish detergent.

If you dip traps and they have thick dip on them and don't dry well they will give off an odor and a lot of odor. As the ground moistens that too will interact with the dip and give off odor. I like others don't feel the odor of fuel is an issue with most farmland canines. What may well be the issue is you bury a sticky, gooey trap into the soil and you now have a very different and distinct odor in a very small and defined spot. More like an attraction than the catching device. Proper planning should avoid most if not all of that issue.

I know some prefer water based dip, like Dakota Line's. Others dye. Some just wax. It seems like opinions are often all over the board on this topic.

I have used speed dip for years. I get a few traps dug ... kinda blame speed dip maybe... then again I get a few traps dug just with a liquid wax like FMJ or even wax U melt and dip.. I have used both coleman fuel at a gallon to 1 can of speed dip... works way better with 1.25 or even 1.5 gallons to a can of speed dip. The last year or two I just used gas... no ethanol at the 1.5 gallon to a 1 can of speed dip rate. Mite dip some traps twice a few days apart. And if you can do it on a hot few days..... low humidity if you can. But that's pretty hard here in Nebraska. Always humid when it's hot. I am getting enough traps where I don't have to use freshly dipped ones the same year I dip them. That's kinda nice. Bout like most trappers..... we have more traps then we need. Maybe!
