I was wanting to try and make some mouse bait and was wondering how and where to catch larger numbers of mice. I already trapped out the shed and the cabin. We live out in the swamp and have a couple different field types.
About how many does one need to make a pint?
Thank you for any advice.

Do you use regular mouse traps? Or is there some other way that you catch them? Lots of brush piles, gonna be even more when I start cutting all these dead ash trees.
Thanks for the replies.

Seems like a lot of work to me. When actually the use of the urine soaked nest Is a lot more effective then the ground up mouse.

Jerry, Yes Sir just hit on something. Set all around the horse and dog food. Lol. I would, but with all the cats she has I doubt there is a mouse within a hundred yards of her place! I was thinking about putting some weasel boxes around the chicken coop but she said that she puts poison under it.

2-1 gallon freezer bags will make you about a gallon ice cream bucket of ground mice.
So, if you fill up 1 gallon freezer bag with mice, you should be about where you are looking to get. thanks al I was going to mention that a gallon ziplock bag will yield roughly a quart of processed meat Thanks guys. I got a ways to go. I don't even have a quart bag filled yet. I guess I need to start long lining! Do you guys tie your traps off to anything in case something larger than a mouse finds its way into the mouse trap?

PCR2 that is a darn good method I use old tin and 4x4 runners with a quart of soybeans for voles. Milo or corn for mice. And yes jerry I staple trot line string to mine and use gutter spikes if I trap a brushpile or fence row. Even that's no guarantee! I prefer pearlings on a metal building staple the string to the pearling. caught mouse dangles keeps em from getting as trap shy!

you correct joe its hard to believe what you can and do catch in snap traps! Its a eye opener to catch a 3' black snake in one! lol but you know your on target when your snapping snakes! I was surprised by the sheer amount of toads I catch in them out in the rough stuff.

First of all a urine soaked mouse nest(mouse urine)has a lot more odor than ground up mice. And It's a lot more natural. I only use It when trapping canines. A chunk of the nest shoved down the hole or placed under something works well.
Availability simple. Any pet store will gladly give you mouse bedding or like I did I just got a whole bunch of mice from a UW research facility. Then I just raised my own nest builders. I even bottled up live mice with a bit of nesting and a section of apple. The apple gives them something to eat and gives them moisture. Punch a few holes In the jar and bury It on location. Did I catch any canines using this method? I did but It was more of a pain In the butt then just using the urine soaked nesting material.
The other thing Is a dirt hole Is not a natural looking set. I had better luck just digging the hole then shoving the nesting material down In It. Then covering It with dirt with just a bit of the nest showing.
I never tried It but I bet It would work good for mink.

tlguy that is exactly what I use. 5 gallon bucket with peanut butter and about 3 inches of water in the bucket. Don't take long to take care of a lot of mice. Please pm me the details. Just looking to get some bait for me and a buddy.

Especially when it starts getting cooler. Never seen so many mice in my life!

TONY- I showed off some moves this afternoon. I was checking my traps in the outhouse at the cabin. I had one. There is a nest on top of the non functioning light in there. I thought that I would check and see if there were any left. Turns out there was a young one. It sat on a wire next to the rafter. I figured I could grab it by the tail and throw it on the floor and kill it. I still think I could but the darn thing decided that it would jump on my shoulder, run around my arm, down my side and then go for the door.
Truth be told, it was better than dancing with yellow jackets!

yes jerry yellow jackets are the devil!! Got a story about a jd 450 dozer, Dad and a short legged jack russel. Not sure how many times Dad got tagged but that never bothered him but the dog was down for about 3-4 days. She only moved to eat, pee or poop. She did that all at the same time. Dad said the swarm was doing their best on him and that little Pearl dog was just a biting at them. He threw her off by the house. Probably saved her. She wouldn't leave his side lest he did that. The only other time she would leave him was if I went out hunting. I could walk close to a mile with no snow and that darn dog would find me and go running 50 yards out in front of me. She did have a little quirk. If it did not run she did not care. Seen her check some briar bushes, I bet she touched noses with this rabbit. This thing was so scared I couldn't kick it to make it move. Funny how the one you hated the most (20 years ago) is now the one that I miss the most. Heck I would let her chew on the rest of the gun now if I could follower her again just one more time.

nice story jerry dogs can really find there way into a persons soul! My father was bitten badly by honey bees as a teen ager. Gram ma picked over 100 stingers out then the hospital got another 100 more. Family said he was a very sick boy for over a week. Now even a sweat bee bite will make him swell up like a dog tick! Needless to say I get the burden of dealing with all the bitting bugs he encounters now. I m like a pro wasp & hornet assasin

Goggle mice for sale.
Looks like you can buy a bag of 100 frozen mice for $35.00. If I was going to make mouse bait It's the way I would go. Dump the bag of mice In the blender and your good to go.LOL

I was going to ask the question about buying them offline. I can only imagine that it’s how a lot of bait makers do it. I couldn’t imagine catching enough mice for mass production.
If you’re serious about buying them, which ones would you buy and which ones would you not buy?

I have no Idea on what mice to buy. But a mouse Is a mouse I would think. And once ground up and tainted a bit I don't think It's a issue. Looks like you can buy the new born ones also. No hair to deal with. LOl
Buy a few mice and grow your own bait stock. It won't take long before your going to have to add on more cage space. I did It for awhile and It's pretty easy.

If you’re serious about buying them, which ones would you buy and which ones would you not buy? I catch packrats for one commercial lure makers. So I know not all buy captive raised rodents.

I catch packrats for one commercial lure makers. So I know not all buy captive raised rodents. Most certainly not trying to discredit anyone’s business or offend any of the wonderful bait makers, I just couldn’t imagine being able to procure enough mice to produce such a big quantity to satisfy demand. Now that I think of it after Beav’s comment, maybe some raise their own. I’m just wondering how a little guy like me, who isn’t really looking for a divorce, but would like to play with baits, would go about getting enough mice to give it a try.
