I've grated up dry cow pies with my sifter over a set. Right over the dirt pattern.
I've also stacked two or three of them up and put lure or urine on the cow pie "post." Stacked up they have good eye appeal. You can put bait between layers too stacked and that caught coyotes for me. A mouse sized hole at base of a cow pie with bait in the hole works too, the pie is backing in this case.
I haven't used just pies though, always used them in pastures as either backing, or for the visual attractor, or as mentioned grated up dry ones over the set to help blend in and cover scents.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

What sets do you think they would be effective on? Thanks

I like them for flat sets. Put a little lure on the edge of them and use them for backing. Make a little hole along the edge and put lure in it. Or put a little lure or bait under one. Or set a trap and fix a piece of fur to the pan and bury it with a little bit of the fur sticking up out of the dirt then put the cow pie over it with no lure. I use them for guides too. Sometimes I set a trap with nothing and put one on top of it. Coyotes flip them over to get crickets and other bugs to eat. Lots of uses for cow pies. use your imagination

Larry, I like your idea about the fur on the pan. Whenever I used a pie for backing it seemed the majority of the time the coyote would move it with out getting caught. Do you think they pounce on it like they are mousing?

Did the same as jabNE. And have used them to make a critter stutter step over them right into a trap on a blind set on a well worn cow path.

They make a good backing and when it gets cold I slip a little LDC under the edge nearest the trap

I think so. I also have seen 3/4 crickets under a cow pie and I think that when a coyote flips one over he is ready to pounce on a cricket. I would think a plastic one wired on the pan would work. Early season coyotes droppings have lots or cricket and grasshopper parts in them.

We cannot have exposed animal parts for bait here so the fur on the pan under the cow pie is what I came up with so I was legal.

Like I said- it isn't a set I use all the time but It has it's place. If you have a feedlot with a lot of coons around I would not use it because coons like to take the cow pie and bust it up and eat it.

I'll pick up a few dried ones in the farm country around home now and then and used them on my line up north. I use one once in a while at the intersection of log roads in heavy woods. I've used them with gland lure and or urine applied to them, but they seem to work just about as well by themselves. Seems like everything from coyotes, to fisher and cats want a sniff.

Mr. Badgerman.
I am a fellow Idahoan. I farm out here in Dry Lake and I have been assigned the duty of getting rid of our badgers. I've been at it for a couple of weeks and nothing. I see this morning one walked by about 4 of my sets and didn't even stray from his path right down the dirt road. I have been using dead gophers that I have trapped for bait. I also bought some badger glandular from Rocky Mountain fur in Caldwell and still no luck. Can you give me any tips, hints,or direction? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you, Clint

Typically the rains dissolve them here. Horse droppings are a much more useful manure.
