Basically, it's four small "mouse sized" holes in a square, maybe 9-12" apart, with a trap bedded in the middle. Each hole gets a different lure/bait.

I
I have had good success with the compass set. Another tip Michigantrapper for this set is to put your lure on a q tip and put it down the hole with the lure end up. If you get some rain it might get washed out some but it not sitting in water

Cut hole for trap

Bed trap solid

Punch four 3/4" holes One each North South East West

Put 4 different lures in the holes NO BAIT. I use a combination like coyote gland, bobcat gland, mink gland and beaver oil

Blend set in so well YOU can't tell where it is. (Mark it or pick something to establish its location, I like to use a softball sized rock about 4 feet away)

I have also found they work best if the are not On the edge of the field but 20-40'yards out in the field. Or in the center of two tracks

I've wrote and had published two stories about this set, it is effective especially where dirtholes have been used by many trappers in an area Make it right and you will catch coyotes and fox with it. Also. Remakes in the trap circle work well too, I've caught up to 3 canines in the same location/remake

NO BACKING and AWAY FROM ANY BRUSH I think they just feel comfortable with no backing or structure around the set, I have video of a mature male coyote spending 56 seconds on top of a compass set, spinning and sniffing It step on the pan 5 times (clay had washed under pan so it wouldn't drop) Then it took a dump right next to it, and walked away

I know it was a mature male as I caught it a two months later, 150 yards from that set

And I had two bucks and several doe also visit and sniff the set some before and some after the coyote visited it

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Great set when proper backing isn't where you want the set.

Very neat set! How far are you putting the holes from the center of the pan?

Michigan Trappin could you tell me why you use lure only and no bait. Just curious. Thanks

Because you don't want grinners and coons

And you do not want the coyote stopping to dig one of your holes out, you want it sniffing the lures and moving its feet around, because you use NO BACKING they will approach from any direction. If it approaches from the direction that has bait, it will not have to step on your pan to dig out bait, but with lures it is moving moving moving to get its nose over each hole
