Just like so many other things some folks think they have to make it political. I don't know about what anyone else has left from the old county Civil Defense system. Here the old yellow sirens on the pole been up dated to mostly weather sirens. They still test them second Monday of the month. But they are relics of the old A-bomb run for the shelter. When all the flooding took place here a couple weeks ago. I got a local flash flood warning on my phone about two hours before I got the alert to go help. City to the north of us you can sign up and get alerts from police on their phones. Got it set up so they can do just a so many block area. I got to think if the locals can trip those alerts to a specific area. Feds could probably trip it by area code or even smaller zones... Everyone needs to just relax, lay back, do as your told.. LOL! Does bother me though that mine went off even though I had my tin foil hat on.

great idea I have been saying we needed this or something for 17 years and a few weeks , my employer even developed a mass notification system for medical agencies shortly after 9/11/01 many places are using it.
where this presidentialalert needs further development , there needs to be a way to make it silent.
I was talking with the Deputy chief tonight and we were talking about a bunch of things and I asked if they were given any way to silence it. he said no , would local LE be able to use it on a local or regional level he thought the answer was no.
he was telling me there were people who sued to have a way to turn it off and didn't get it
I asked , if we are in the middle of a national emergency and you are responding to a local even lets say a Mass active shooter event with radical extremists shooting up dozens of locations at once and the shelter in place order goes out at a national level and your phone starts squawking , the police union needs to demand a way to turn it off , every officer is now carrying a phone we the city pay for their phones they use them so much and they are that important to job communications.
there would be other situations that it would also be necessary
I attended an active shooter training earlier this week , how cell phone heavy our society is was apparent in the training , virtually every slide in the presentation included "silence your cell phone" because the instant shooting starts people call to check on their loved ones. which could give away their position if they are sheltering in place. if egress isn't an option lock the door , turn off the lights , get out of sight , silence your cell phone , have one person the farthest from the door place the 911 call quietly , while others form a plan of attack to defend if the shooter gets through the door.
Why on earth would you ever want to silence it? If something pops off that’s a big enough deal to get a national security alert, I darn sure want to make sure I hear it.
if your an officer getting ready to engage a terrorist cell and your moving in around their compound and a shelter in place order goes out , your going to want to not have your phone start squawking.
if your an FBI agent working a surveillance operation again not going to want that phone to start squawking.
that info you will either already know or dispatch can tell you over the radio that is in your ear .
run silent needs to mean run silent some times
for right now having a headphones plugged in is the only option.
I am not saying every average Joe , I am saying people in specific roles should have an all silent option that isn't airplane mode but for now that is what they will likely have to use.

GreencountyPete, Don't officers and others that have times that they need to run Silent, have the ability to turn their volume off on their phone so as to not screw up the mission? That,to me, sounds like an easy enough fix.

that is the issue , my kids were at school they and all the other kids keep phones on silent from the first bell to the last.
every kid in the school as well as every teacher in the schools phone went off at the same time.
the software is written to override your choice , it turns on the volume to high for the squawk tone.
school is an inconvenience but not really an issue the teachers just had them silence it and move on with class , apps on the phones are used in many of the classes , they also all have laptops now.
so yes officers absolutely have times they need to run silent , but this overrides the silent function of the phone.
currently the only option is to run in airplane mode or powered off.
powered off is not a good option as it takes many phones a few minutes to boot up , because honestly they are not phones they are very small handheld computers putting up a Voice over IP packet radio communication.
Airplane mode would work it disables your ability send or receive anything.
this is probably what they will have to do is go to airplane mode. but that is one more thing to have to mess with.
