I have been messing around with some tinctures for the last year or two. Most of them have been soaking in Everclear for over a year.

My question is since this tincture is alcohol based will it dissipate too fast? I am thinking of adding it to glycerine to make it adhere longer to a base.

Am I on track with this way of thinking?

Also - straight essence should do fine on its own but is it best to also add glycerine to it?

Thanks.

Brian

Yukonal is there a certain ratio of glycerin you try to keep? Is that for antifreeze

peanut oil does a better job on essence! Mix it up glycerine isn't the best option for certain materials.. Some materials don't tincture fully using glycerine.Grain alchol will dissolve some completely. Olive oil works better on some plant matter. Diethyl phthalate works best on the musks

My thought if aged long enough most bases should absorb the tinctures odor and hold it even after alchol has burned off. From my understanding this is also where a proper fixative can really benefit a formulation. I personally try not to add anything that doesn't add odor to the formulation unless absolutely necessary as this would just cause dilution of the odor profile.

yes sir I agree to most of that but some tincturing agents wont pull out the chemical make up of its host! The smell alones not enough in some cases. take rat glands for instance I can preserve and get a weak tincture using 100 proof alcohol. But in my opinion alochol isn't a good solovent for tincturing if you want a very weak side smell it works . NOW GO 50/50 alcohol and glycerine you get a stronger tincture that hangs around.. I still have a ton to learn on tincturing the hobby level guy is best off buying good tinctures versus making them! I've wasted some good materials trying!! But hey you wont succeed if you never try

I agree with that Tony . U have to have a good tincture to start with. My point was if you have a strong tincture with just alchol my experience is the base material will hold the odor without adding glycerin most of the time.

Alcohol is very volatile so it burns off quick! To compensate in formulas I use twice as much so after burn off the residual smell remains. I find alcohol worthless for tincturing castor! 100 proof spiced rum achieves a weak castor tincture. Great in places you want a weak castor smell with a touch of curiosity. Gives fox glands a nice side kicker! Although that tincture set for a year and a half to get to that point.

For urine, about 25% glycerine...and yes, that is to prevent freezing. But, it does double duty to make the urine hang onto the backing longer and better. Also helps in the wet weather.

Lure...tablespoon for 8 oz.

Bait...8 oz per gallon.

Castor...blended for the proper consistency.

These are approximate measurements...but you get the idea. I have to deal with freezing conditions here, and glycerin just plain helps. I experimented with lanoline this year, and really like what it does for me. Quite a bit of horsing around to get that...not too much, not too little, amount.

I soaked some rat glands covered with glycerine, for a year, and used it in my K9 curiosity lure. When ground up in the food processor (with the glycerin), they had a nice, obvious odor to them.
