I skinned out a coyote from a friend that was shot 5 days ago about 15 minutes south of the Canadian border and it was very blue. It was also a pup. Fur was surprisingly not that bad for this time of year. Plenty of real early cold here this year as well. Was scouting out bridges last night and the shallow puddles underneath them I planned on putting in water sets for coon with #2DBL's were frozen with a half inch of ice.
I stirred the pot a couple weeks back on whether or not this unseasonable early cold could leather prime critters early and the overwhelming response was no. After laying knife to the coyote 5 days ago I'm on board with that 100%. Maybe I skinned out a late spring pup and maybe you caught an early spring pup so it was older. Seems kind of a toss to the quarter this early in the year on whether or not they are going to look decent. I remember the post, and also agree that 95% of it is the time of day. But I think if they are healthy and eating a lot, they will turn quicker than a coyote that has very little to eat. I know this one wasn't "prime". but I have caught coyotes later in the year that were WAY more blue skinned than this one.

Might it be that all the rainy CLOUDY weather has shortened the daylight hours enough to have them prime a bit earlier? Dennis

The hours are the same. Clouds block a certain amount of UV light.

If it was 95% daylight then there would be a date to go by every year, LOL I think there is a 2 week window depending on other things too. Been cloudy and cool here for the last 3 weeks so they are closer then past warmer years as the skunks are looking like they are coming along nicely earlier then past years.

You cant always judge it to be a pup by it's size. Not blue, this early, could well be an adult.

I also thought skunks looked better this year here as well
