The way I interpret the law on right of way trapping within 500 feet of an occupied building I only need permission if I am using a conibear trap I do not need permission if I am using a dog proof or a foothold trap is this correct?

I'm not sure but my personal choice would be to get permission regardless of the law. If the occupant has a per I'm sure they would want to know if someone is trapping close by.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

You don't need permission if using DPs or footholds (or a body grip less than 6.5" jawspread) In MN. That said, use your head. Just because you CAN set a trap legally doesn't mean we should set a trap.

Many guys use #160s to get away from asking permission. However, a lot of people pets will fit in a 160 just fine. Again....back to just because we can....doesn't mean we should clause. The iffy places are exactly what the DPs are for. Trap selection is critical anywhere a dog can show up...and they have feet... They can wander quite aways from a home/farm.

I've known many places in SE MN that I see people walking their dogs down the gravel road from the nearby farm or house. A lot of these dogs pass right by coon trails. I keep this in mind when setting traps on dry ground coon trails anywhere near a house/farm.

I don't set conibears in right of ways for the reasons stated. I usually do stop and talk to the people. Thank you for your responses
