I have the chance to set on a dead pit for a hog unit. Obviously will be setting back aways because of laws and common sense. The coyotes feed heavily here, so what would work best for sets. Pit is in the wide open in the corner of a pivot, so there are no trails. Is it even worth setting on?

i'd look for a couple high spots back away to set first where they check out the pit before committing and going in.

Pee posts coming and going. Got to be alot of dominance on display when they are concentrated at a site like that.

Set it heavy with your standard sets. Hit them hard before they know whats going on, and yeah, post on the approaches is the perfect conclusion. Closer in, flat sets and DH will produce quickly, but they will need that place to pee! After they get tougher to catch, you can set some trails, it will become more obvious how they are approaching and leaving. The down side is there are usually a few or more mangy or lousy ones in the mix, but is a good place to take them out of the pop. Good luck Larry!

Thanks, Lee. Didn't know if they would respond to baited sets with all the food. I have read about the mange problem. I'll see what I can do with them ole dogs.

They are dogs, Larry! Greedy is what I would call it. If you have two, no matter how much they have already ate, they will want to eat what is supposed to be the other ones food! Like I said, hit them with both barrels. In places like that, most trappers don't put in enough sets. Set it heavy!

Depends on the sign, but They will be coming from quite a distance to it, so you may have the equivalent of three or four family groups. Maybe more, depending on the lay of the land. I would set heavy, ten to fifeteen sets wouldn't be out of the question. Hard to give advise without seeing it first hand! lol

This is the kind of information you don't know you need until you need it. Thank you for sharing.

If they been dumping here for a year or more all the coyotes in a large area will know about it and as it gets colder they will keep back filling in this area quicker than in a normal area.

I have set 2 miles from It and was catching coyotes that were feeding on the bait. Set close and set anywhere you see sign.
Like Lee said. Set heavy.

Like Lee said, set heavy. I’ve been trapping dead pits for 20 years. The sky is the limit. 10-30 is usually no problem. Good luck

I'm curious why the coyotes have a higher incidence of mange? I have read this in the past.

ldw they nip and push each other around in these spots fussing over who eats first and what. all bunched into that one small area. I believe they will travel 10 miles one way to these spots. one mangy coyote shows up and in a few short weeks a lot of them have it. when you take those mangy ones out you are doing a lot to slowing its spread anyplace within ten miles of the dead pile. even if only half are worth skinning it still pays off. your not driving all those extra miles to chase the same coyotes your on top of in one spot.

drought years deadpiles are unbelievably productive
