I was boiling today and noticed when I pulled my traps out of the pot that they looked like they had oil on them. Now these traps have been used for years...no new traps! The pot has been used also for years. Could this be natural oils from the walnuts? After they dried they didnt look like they had film on them. Anyone else ever have this happen?

Are you guys boiling with the nuts or the husks? I have always used just the husks which are what contains the tannin that darkens the traps.

They work better with just the husk. I collect them and throw the husk n a barrel of rain water and let them steep.

I use the whole nut, husk and all, no reason not to unless you want to eat the nut.

Why do they work better without the nut?

If the husk has turned black, I guess the whole thing would work fine. I always removed the nut and saved that for eating. The husk turns black quicker I think because the air can get at it. It may also work better because more of the husk surface is exposed to the water. AND..maybe I am completely wrong..all except for the walnut eating part.

I have 8 black walnut trees here in the lots. I think I saw about 6 nuts in one tree this season. A monstrous hail storm back about the first week in May did about $20,000 damage to the house and 1 vehicle and took out most of the mast bloom. It's logwood dye for me this year and I need to be getting to it.

LOL! Well, I have been wrong once or twice before. My wife keeps track. She will have a much more accurate count.
I will say that I have gone a mile or two out of my way to a place where I knew they had really good black walnut ice cream. mmmmm

Found ONE walnut in my yard that the squirrels didn't haul off out of 3 big walnut trees. I used logwood as well this round.
