What does everyone think is the ideal trap depth for a pocket set for raccoons? What is the maximum depth? How deep will coons regularly walk around in? I try to make mine in about 1" of water, in little trickles of water that are no deeper than about 6".

Well I do mine different. If I have enough bank height I'll dig my pocket 4" above the water line. I have better eye appeal If the water comes up I'm still In business. You should have caught the critter before It even thinks about digging out your bait. And for mink they don't go In the hole they just stand outside and look In and that's when you catch them.

Or just don't dig a pocket. Take your tile spade dig a slot kind of like you do when planting small pine trees. Drive the spade In move It back and forth to create a slot toss In your bait and kick It closed. A lot less screwing around and you have accomplished the same thing as if you were digging a pocket. Try It It works.

I like the tile spade trick beav. I'll use that. I find that sometimes the mud is so sticky that I have to pull the mud off after every scoop. How deep under the water do you set your trap, or are you saying you set it above the water line?

Trap goes In the water. If your trapping coon then 3 or 4" Isn't to deep. But If your targeting mink rats and coon then I would stay with about 1" of water. Bury your chain coon just love to feel around and mess with things.

If the water Is to deep you can always build up the bottom till you get the depth you want.

I have always tried to keep at 2" or under. Never been one to just target coons on pocket sets. However if bank is right I'll set up to 3 traps around pocket. One at hole and the others on both sides approaching.

I like shallower water because a mink might swim over my trap if it is too deep so I stick to about 2''
