So I’m new to trapping. I have been a member on here for years but have never ran across the time to actually do it. I have trapped muskrats with my kids but that’s simple. Wanting to get into the rest of it on a small scale. I have a couple dozen traps. And a good idea on a location pretty close to home that I never see any people in all winter. My questions are. What is a good general purpose lure for predators. And how do I go about making sure there is no one else in the area? I don’t want to be the guy stepping on other guys toes. Not looking to even make any money. But would love to teach my 3 boys how to do real world stuff instead of play video games like a bunch of Whinny privileged brats.

"Predators" is a wide perimeter. I think if you narrow it down a bit and you will be more likely to attract some input.

Fox, yotes, lynx maybe wolverine Sorry I didn’t realize it was so vague.

So is there one lure for that bunch or should I have multiple lures for best results

I have used castor based lures with good results for fox and lynx and I wouldn't be surprised if a coyote would be interested as well as the wolverine. We don't have coyotes here. Something a little skunky will carry further in cold weather and could be used as well. I rely pretty heavy on tainted meat scraps which work good for canines and the wolverine especially after some cold hard times. The lynx may check it out as well, but don't seem to be as much greedy as they are curious.

We tend to use bait only, slightly tainted beaver chunks works well for everything, all predators want meat, tempt them with a good chunk and you'll interest them quickly, and it seems natural to them. Caught many critters using only bait, especially trap shy canines who associate strange lure smells with trappers. Marten like lures with bait though. Just my two cents.

I have used soured fish for all my years in Alaska for everything from marten to wolves and wolverine and fox. Try different scents and stuff but always back to the fish cause I carry it for dog food traveling on the trapline. Smells even in real cold. Point is though that the most important thing is to get out and start doing it. I'm far far from an expert as I never trapped with good or really any trappers but I got out and tried. Good luck - it'll come to you just by getting out there.

If you are going to dig a pit to sour your fish in dig it far from anything as it will attract bears. I dug one across the river from my dads bush camp when I was a kid. Boy was he mad and I did not even get any bait out of it as the grizzly bear took it all.

In my honest opinion there is only one lure I will use around the valley and that is fox urine. If you use anything else you will get dogs. 99% of my sets that are remotely close to the valley are blind snare sets. Once I get out of town I really like Just Mice with castor for fox and yotes. I also still do a lot of pee post sets as well with fox pee out of town. If I'm going for cat I use magnum marten or anything that is skunky. That will also generally push away K9s. Best of luck, if you every have any questions you can message me to I'm in the valley.
