Terrence, Weatherby came out with a light rifle made for women, called the Vanguard "Camilla". I recently handled one of these locally and they are really nice. Should fit your wife just fine, but of course you would want to check it out first.

Middle boy that’s 15 just bought his first rifle Remington 700 VTR in a 260. First thing I thought when I shot it was it would be a great gun for a lady. Light weight & low recoil, Plus it’s cool looking

I doubt the you can do better than the the 7-08. You need a low recoiling rifle but you also need something that will anchor a deer. In my experience the 7-08 is perfect. My rifle of choice and I am 72 years old, 60 years of experience, and many rifles to choose from.
