I'm looking for a new deer rifle for my wife.she currently shoots a Rossi 243 and likes it but I was wondering how much more a 7mm08 kicks? I have no experience with this caliber other than my brother-in-law has one and he says it doesn't kick much more. Just looking for some suggestions as to what to get her.

You will love the 7mm-08. Best bang for limited recoil.

get something with a threaded muzzle 7mm-08 or even 308 , add a AR stoner Muzzle break 25 dollars.

I was amazed when I added one to my 308 a few weeks ago , cut the recoil in half.

there is certainly nothing wrong with 243 for deer

but if she is looking at larger game in the future 7mm-08 or 308 would cover you for most everything in north america at reasonable distance.
the other thing is obviously make sure the rifle fits her measure he length of pull and go shopping with that in mind.

suppressors also reduce felt recoil if your state allows hunting with one it is more money but a happy hunting partner wife is a hard thing to come by so worth the investment.

brakes make the gun some louder not so much for the shooter , but for those near by.

but what a difference they can make in felt recoil

there was a gun writer a wile back he locked a rifle in a shooting rest , he set it up so it could slide freely then he tested a 308 with several different muzzle brakes and devices measuring how far the same gun slid back on the table it was amazing how much of a difference the right brake can make. about 50%

here is the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qDf6Xf0rR4

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I took my wife to a gun smith. had him make a stock that fits her. She is barely five feet tall. Had him put a howa barreled action on it in 300 win mag. I handload. I can load 150 grain bullets at 26-2700 fps. very little recoil and kill deer no problem. Since the stock fits her I can load a 180 grain up around 3000 if she needs to smack something hard. since it fits she can still shoot 8-10 rounds without getting sore.

I have the 7mm-08 for my sons and myself and wife.
It works out great. It kicks a slight amount more than the 243.
My 10yr old shoots it fine though. It is not bad at all.

She doesn't need a bigger gun but she is a die hard Archer and she's uncomfortable with most rifles. So I'm looking for a nice bolt action she can use with ease. I was thinking about the 7mm08 cause it is a bit bigger and she really wants to shoot a bear. I will have the gun fit to her if need be just like I did her weatherby sa08 12 gauge she uses for duck hunting. Jim da stinks for me cause I'm 6'3" and she is 5'1" so I don't get to use her guns. Lol

My wife has had a Remington model 7, youth rifle in 7mm-08 since 96 and it's the one rifle I can't sell. I did reduce the load a little since I reload, but she's killed them out to 200 yrds.

I got my wife a 7mm08 in a Remington Model Seven (Model if I remember right) She shoots tacks with it. She is pretty small I think we had the stock shaved a bit.But a great choice for her.

I don't know where the '257 Roberts fits in here, but I own one and I think it would make an awesome gun for the wife.

My wife loves my ruger 77 youth in 308. Heck I hunt with it alot as its easy to pack and on the shoulder. All my kids used it too. Started them from the bench with my 243 but it's got a heavier barrel and they didn't like to carry it and was harder for them to find a solid rest with in the field due to the weiggt.

Why not buy her what she wants to shoot? She could try a few different rifles and pick one.

I will buy her what she wants but there is not many that fit her off the shelf so it's much more of a recoil thing than style. She is a tough one and I wouldn't hesitate to let her hunt with my 30-06 but it's a bit too long for her to shoulder quick if needed. She has hunted with a 30-30 ,308 ,44mag,and a 243 so I'm not worried about what she can handle just want her more comfortable with a rifle.

She will love the 7MM08. A new gun is a wonderful Christmas present. No need to second guess your decision.

You answered your own question buy her what fits then pick a caliber that she can handle and you can buy ammo for anywhere. I'm a big believer in rifle fit for the shooter vs recoil pcs and muzzle breakers.. 260 or 7mm 08 are both great rounds till you drop your gun and need to find an extra box of ammo to resite with in backwater USA. Heck I probley have a mags worth of 308 in the doors and pockets of my truck and I'm sure I could find ammo if needed in just about any little town.

Terrence, Weatherby came out with a light rifle made for women, called the Vanguard "Camilla". I recently handled one of these locally and they are really nice. Should fit your wife just fine, but of course you would want to check it out first.

Middle boy that’s 15 just bought his first rifle Remington 700 VTR in a 260. First thing I thought when I shot it was it would be a great gun for a lady. Light weight & low recoil, Plus it’s cool looking

I doubt the you can do better than the the 7-08. You need a low recoiling rifle but you also need something that will anchor a deer. In my experience the 7-08 is perfect. My rifle of choice and I am 72 years old, 60 years of experience, and many rifles to choose from.
