When you use beaver meat as bait, is there a certain part of the carcass that is preferred?

The meat is good from anywheres. However I do like the back legs and the loin but only because they have the most meat.
I always cut the beav in big pieces ie—ea -back leg and thigh [2 pieces] cut in half at the rib cage and split both [4 pieces]. I will bag up the liver, heart and lungs and use a a dirt hole. The guts —sometimes I will make a drag by using 1/8 mesh wire and putting the guts in and hook on to it and create a scent trail from set to set. If I am on farm roads i tie it to the back of the truck. At each stop on the private roads I pour some water on the drag to refresh.

You can use the fat/flesh scrapings for weasel too. Still gives off odor and that fat doesn't freeze easily, thus giving off odor longer in winter.

Everything likes beaver. Any part of it.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I used a lot of the fat scrapings as well as the meat for bait. I really didn't notice any preference with the animals. I caught a lot of bobcat and coon on it, but not very many coyotes.

I completely agree. I've had good luck catching coon and bobcat, but think there are plenty of better choices for canines.

I would say the most attractive parts in order would be the castors, the oil sacs, then the meat. Castor and oils have worked well for me on canines, just not so much the meat.

like everybody else says. Every thing likes beaver meat. Many different ways to use it.

Very interesting. I could see that working well.

Beaver just doesn't work for me. Beaver carcass's are the last things the coyotes will eat in a bait pile. Might be a local thing. Deer meat scraps and organs seem to work best.

Beaver are the big rodent things that chew down trees and have scaly flat tails eh?

Seriously though, very odd. Beaver is the candy of the animal world. Never seen a critter not like it. Usually otter, coyote and to a lesser extent coon get eaten last.

Only time I have seen bait ignored is when fresh meat is readily available, like in a deer yard. Even then eventually every canine will check it out.

As for what part, I chop a frozen beaver into chunks about the size of a third of a loaf of bread and use that for fisher boxes. I never even know what part gets used, it all works.

I made some bait using beaver as the base instead of bobcat meat. (ran out of bobcat meat). The bait works but nowhere as good as the cat meat base. If beaver is all i have then i will use it but dont think its great, or even good. Now of course castor, oil sacks, tails, and liver are all good things to use in bait but the meat is less than optimal. I trap coyotes mostly. I would rather have a rabbit or a chunk of chicken than beaver meat.

Almost all of my canine baits are mouse based. If I throw a beaver on a bait pile though, it gets devoured. Beaver gets used in my fisher cubbies.

If mouse was available by the truckload,I would use beaver after the deepfreeze.
Here is a list of good bait that is basically useless after 25 below.
-Muskrat
-Grouse scraps
-Fox
-Chicken scraps
-most fish
-Pork scrap

Here is a list of fair bait after the deepfreeze.
-Moose scrap
-Bear scrap
-Skunk
-Cat
-Sardines
-Fat Goose scraps.

Here is the best bait with the most calling power after the deepfreeze
-Beef scraps with fat
-Beaver

Always the first thing I do when I go to camp is catch some beavers for bait. After skinning and removing castors/oil sacs I then just start cutting off pieces about 3/4 lb and bag them up. Good skulls and tails are kept and what’s left is cut in half to use in wolverine boxes. February March beavers I keep back straps and hind quarters to eat at home.

Agree with most of what Joe says except pick up 3 dozen snap traps and move them every 3 days.. Gives me enough yummy mice for 3 dozen yote sets to start the season .. All an old man can handle,

I found a dead mouse In the garage the other day It didn't have any smell at all.
Like Boco said In a few days whether It's cold or warm that mouse Is going to get as dry as a pop corn fart.

Cat(Lynx) is next best bait in the bush for trappers as it is readily available all winter. Not as good as bear, but bear scraps are usually long gone by the deep freeze, and not readily available.Lynx can be fat or lean depending on the year. Some lynx are extremely fat.But it works fair no matter.Lynx meat is the same as a ruffed grouse breast as far as appearance. Not dark like bobcat.I don't know what frozen bobcat meat would be like,no bobcats here.
And it is not just fat that makes a good cold weather bait, but the type of fat that doesn't freeze like a rock even at 20 below. That would be beaver, bear, skunk and beef scraps in my experience.Beef scraps,or any kind for that matter are getting a lot harder to get from the butcher the last few years.
I got some real fat coon carcasses once from a trapper in the south.I thought they would be good jackpot bait, but they were a dud, nothing was interested, even the birds didn't seem to like it.I chalked that up to coon being foreign to the area, but since have heard others relay that coon is not a good bait.So its not as simple as the bait just being "fat".

Some of the pork scrap at the butchers contains some bacon ends occasionally but not much.
