What color would this grade. I believe the first looks like a 3-4. And the second is a close 1-2 category but 3-4 as well.

I think a 2 would be generous on either.

Its gonna be black when it dries (I think). Looks like a lactating female.

Are you asking for the pelt color or the fur color? There is a difference and a price difference as well for both.

It is a bit difficult to tell fur color with the fur being a bit greasy but I would say the second picture is a good solid 2 and the first picture is a 2-3. IMO

When talking color or size or any parameter of fur, it is important to remember you are talking about fur from all over the US. From Alaska to Florida.

All coon are graded on the same color scale. While a pelt might be a 3-4 for your area in North Dakota, you put your coon up against a coon from another section, say the SE US and you will be surprised nhow nice and clear your coon look!! LOL

Not only do ND coon have more size, more heaviness, they have better color.

It is very common for Trappers to judge their fur on just their area or region. You gotta look at the big picture.

My female coon tend to run better colors but the leather tends to beat up the grade. I would say those would go in the 2-3 color grade at NAFA.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I never thought of it that way by comparing on a national level. I know I'm pretty lucky that ND has such good looking and big raccoon compared to elsewhere.

North Dakota coon are very big coon-we get the same type of coon up here.30 lb coon are somewhat common-not by any means all the time but you get lots of 25-30lb coon-which are most of the time 5xl coon.I caught 4 jumbos today-they were very nice coon-released a juvenile as it was off color and maybe a xxl coon. The big males looked good-I will flesh them tomorrow and report back.Caught 2 huge females today as well-no teets-they were dry-thus the hides were in very nice shape-both females were better color than the males. That's the 3rd huge female I have caught this fall that were dry-not sure what that means.

A friend gave me back my 2 big live traps that they borrowed to guard some sweet corn and then in one of their barns that has a watering system that can get messed up pretty easily by coons. Anyway, he gave me a couple of surprises, 2 coons. The smaller one was going south when I finally had time this evening to do some exploration of what they looking like on the inside of the leather so it is adding its nutrients to the earth. But the big boar was still in good shape. He didn't have much fat on him. I'm still getting the garage ready for the season (will start Vets Day) so I put the boar's hide in the freezer and will board it in a week or so. Probably a slate at best but he has some length and color like Nd Native's coon, more or less. We'll see...

Is that fur wet or is that grease right down in the underfur?

Its grease. I get anything but picky when I'm putting up coon. Especially early coon like these two were.

I re-learned last year that early coon aren’t bad if they’re big enough. The last 20 put up last fall were the first caught. They were 4XL but the leather wasn’t nice. I averaged about $11: high was $22 and the low was $5 (which was big but a lactating sow). The 3X and 2X #1 selects, and “labeled” are still at NAFA. Square inches were in demand. Let’s hope buyers want color over square inches this year so my better stuff gets sold
