any advice for utilizing farmer's dead piles during the early season?

sets, distances from the pile, hints, things to avoid, etc...?

Appreciate any experiences y'all would care to share!

I have to legally set at least 30 feet back due to regulations, and I actually prefer to set a ways back. They're already coming to eat there. This might sound crazy but just doing dirtholes has worked well for me. I set up a number of carcass dumps with trail cameras and even if you don't think the coyotes are there they are. They'll come in grab a bite and move out of range to eat it. For some reason they don't like to sit right at the pile and eat (maybe their finnicky nature). In our area the first big snow the coyotes hit the piles heavy, it's almost like they've been saving them up for when times are hard.

I see the same thing..coyotes grab a piece and move it to another location to eat it. It's usually a high spot above the bait pile. Another benefit of a bait pile is it draws unwanted animals like skunks and opossum to the pile and away from your sets.

Generally I do better on the approaches, sometimes a mile away depending on habitat, topography, people, or lack there of.
I find this true of other type "draws" too. Generally.

Wright Brothers, your observation matches up with what the instructor at a recent wolf trapping courses I attended said. He told us to set 100 yards to 2 miles away from the bait pile.
