I have a forge that I ply in some. I am burning Wy stoker in it.
It costs $110 a ton if I pick it up in Minot. Lignite is about 45 a ton. I have no clue what Bituminous costs.

I don't buy it in bulk, it is easier for me to buy it in 40# bags. $6 a bag here in NY.

I can't get any Bituminous here, so I use the nut coal from TSC. It works fine and is $6'ish a 40 lb bag. I love coke from Centaur Forge, but it is just too much at $64 per 50lbs. I use charcoal (NOT grilling briquettes)occasionally, homemade, but it sparks so bad it is scary inside the shop. If I get a portable rivet-type forge that I could use outside, I would use it more often.....it's basically free if I grab a scoop or two of good oak coals from the woodstove throughout the winter and douse it in water to extinguish it so I can use it later. It obviously has to dry a bit after the dousing!

I bit the bullet and coughed up near $600 for a half ton of coke. As little as I get the forge fired up, that will last me for years. I had it shipped up from Georgia.

Coke is the way to go as some coal has way to much sulfur in it to use for forging steel.

Having lungs that suck (COPD, Furrier's Lung), the smoke and sulfuric fumes emitted from coal as it cokes up is hard on this fat guys bellows, and because it is the coked up coal I want in my fire, I figure why not just buy coke already coked! Of course my Bride and daughter, as well as the All Purpose Boy, want me around as long as possible, so they liked the idea of me buying the coke.........after hearing how much more healthy it will be to sniff for hours at a time, why, that stuff is nearly as pure and organic as pure sparkling spring water..............!

Sulfur also does funky stuff to some steels I used for making knives. In my younger years when I was on the path to becoming an engineer, I earned my money doing night shifts driving a big front loader, pushing piles of coke around to load onto ships that took them to this side of the pond from Germany for the US steel industry. In turn we imported Bauxid and iron ore. Some fun and not so fun nights at the cole, coke and ore docks back then.
