Me too
Generally save the beaver for later. Usually busy with the open water critters in November

I plan on trapping a few Beaver in November but like nimzy, I typically trap later. Any idea on why the sample size is limited to November when the season runs into spring?

A good question for DNR. I'll ask at Fur School tonight.

Got mine yesterday as well.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

What are they for, and how does a person get one, never heard of it before.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Hey guys:
I’ll respond in more detail tomorrow, but for now...

This is an experiment to see if we can use that kind of data in place of more expensive flights. I am always in favor of finding ways to do things cheaper and to partner with fellow trappers.

About 1,700 ppl got a booklet. It was a random draw from last year’s license holders (we use last year’s list of license holders as many people don’t buy until season starts or it is mid season)

We decided to do one month only in hopes of getting more accurate information from just a short time period (less likely to forget and never mail back, less likely to grow tired of filling it out)

We picked November because last year we surveyed trappers and asked which month they do the most beaver trapping. November had the most votes.

It’s a trial run, so if it works, I’m sure we will identify and work out kinks moving forward. It may not work, but I think it is worth a try and I’m optimistic it will be at least as useful as flights that are limited to only 1/3 of the state and cost 10x as much as this logbook effort.

None of the information is used for enforcement, taxes or anything other than trying to get some long term trends in population.

And.. yes, I got mine today too (strange to receive a letter from myself). I’ll fill out mine too.

Hope this helps. People can email me with questions too. NathanM.Roberts@wisconsin.gov

Nathan

I was a bit surprised by that too.
30% of respondents said they did MOST of their beaver trapping in Nov
27% said Dec
15% said March

So, if we are going to limit to one month, it made sense to pick the top month.

At some point, it would interesting to see how that varies by region. I suspect there is more spring beaver trapping in the central and southern portion of the state. For now, we want to give this a try and will see about refining it further if it appears promising.

As always, people are welcome to contact me direct with concerns or questions.

Mailed it today... As stated, I don't trap a lot of beavers in November and this year everything froze fast- ended up with (6).
Nathan- Good Luck with the study
