How long do I need to let the traps dry before I can use them? Our rat season opens tomorrow and I've been on the road a lot for work lately, so I still haven't finished prepping my traps. I have a temperature controlled room I can dip my traps in, but I'm concerned they might not cure before tomorrow morning.

The traps have been boiled already. Should I just wax them or will I be ok to paint dip them tonight and use them tomorrow? These are mostly Duke 1.5s and some 110s. They'll mostly be underwater, so I don't think I need to worry about smell, but I've never painted traps before. The reason I wanted to try paint instead of wax is even after filing and torching the dogs and pans, I had some traps I couldn't keep set after they got wet.

Why not just use them as they are? Dip takes awhile to dry. Maybe get some cheap Walmart paint cans and spray them don if you must coat them.

I'm afraid if I use them as is, just boiled and not painted or waxed, is they may rust too much in the 2.5 weeks they'll be out.

Just to clarify, I'm planning to use a 50/50 mix of rustoleum and acetone, not speed dip or full metal jacket.

Dip them and hang them so excess can run off. Keep the room as warm as you can and put a fan on them to speed things up and I think you will be fine.

Go get a gallon of acrylic latex paint. I think I used Farm& Fleets Barn and fence paint.

Mix 2 gallons of water with the paint and stir well. Dip shake off excess and hang to dry should be dry by tomorrow. Or just use them as Is and paint them after the season Is over. A little rust Isn't going to make any difference.
I just can't figure out this obsession with the rustoleum and the paint thinner.

Follow the Beav's advice and put a fan on 'em tonight. If you've got a dehumidifier roll that in there and turn up to high. Should be dried enough.

Usually I agree with beav but enamel paints are way stronger than latex paints! Either one will dry enough to use in 24 hrs with a good heat source and steady air flow. I've used both latex lays on nicer and considerably cheaper but if your after durability go enamel. The color spectrum you can achieve with latex is great. Dipped all my water traps last summer in a olive drab latex. loved the color but most immidiately rusted in all the pivot points.Once they was submerged in water.

Oil based paint (Rust-Oleum) will hold up better, especially in water. BUT... All paint should have AT LEAST 24 hours to fully cure. I'm a painter by trade, over 18 years of experience. Do as you want, but to get the best durability out of any paint, you should wait AT LEAST 24 hours (48hrs is better).

Season opens tomorrow. It's either wait 24 hours and hope there are still 'rat huts to trap, or hope they're dry in the morning and go set. If they were the least bit tacky from the latex paint I'd rub 'em up good in the mud and wipe 'em down with a rag to take the tack out. He should be good to go.

If he uses oil based they might not dry and you certainly couldn't get away with the mud wipe trick.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll just skip the paint and fire up the wax pot again and do a better job of cleaning the dog and pan notch and hopefully weakening the springs will help keep them from firing on their own.

I've had trouble in years past after waxing not being able to keep traps set due to wax on the dog and/or pan, even after scraping and torching. I thought about painting instead of waxing to keep the traps from rusting up too bad while they're out for 2-3 weeks.

They won't. Just wipe 'em down when you're done for the season and paint 'em when you have more time.

True Value sells a latex house stain called Woodsman that comes in many earth tone natural colors and that stuff is great on traps. It’s also great for painting cubbies, floats and such. I always save the little bit that stays in the can from when I do my house nd use it for touch ups and camo striping on conibears.

If you let em get a good coat of rust the paint will hold on better anyway. 2 and a half weeks isnt time enough for them to be hurt by rust. Heck i will use a new traps several weeks before i even dye it the first time.

I agree. Just set them, its only 2.5 weeks how much could they possibly rust ?

So why paint? They will never rust to nothing as long as you live. I have been using traps for years and never have painted any of them and still work fine.
