Was out in the backyard today shooting my crossbow. Looked up at the big Maple that has lost its leaves and there hangs the biggest wasp hive/nest I have ever seen. It is going to go, It is in the 50's here and I assume too warm to deal with them until it gets dang good and cold.

How cold does it have to be to cut it down and then what is the treatment to kill all the buggers inside that will want to sting me?

Thanks in advance!

If you are talking about a hornets nest I usually wait until it gets below freezing just to be safe. Then carefully take it down get some good pics and list on eBay.

I use a product called Tempo. Spray it on or close to go the hive. Once they walk on it and take it on them into the hive, the rest will get it on them and die. Works great on any number of insects and won't harm pets. Been using it for years, little pricy but a little goes a long way!

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

12 ga. 3-4 quick rounds of #9 should kill most of the hornets as well.

When I was a kid about 10, I thought it would be fun to throw rocks at a nest, Figured I could out run 'em. Didn't work so well and I am a lot slower than I was back then.

Just hit it a couple of times with the shotgun. Best if done with your turkey gun. Just shoot traps loads.

One thing to consider is, have they been a problem to you up to this point? If not, I would just let them be. The only time I have done anything about bees by the house was ones that decided they needed to build a nest in the ground by the house. And by the house I mean right by the blocks. Can not say they bothered us but that is just too close. Dumped about a gallon of gas down the hole. Problem solved. No, I did not throw a match on it.

Bees are very important for pollination. I don't kill them unless they are the mean little sobs that live in the ground where I like to frequent. If they are not within 20' of the house I just leave them alone. I don't like getting tagged 6-10+ times when out of that range but I learn to walk around that area. I know in an hour or two you won't even be able to tell I got stung. That is just me. If you are allergic to them I can see not wanting them around.

Got a funny story about my Dad, a dozer and a jack russel running over a ground nest. That dang dog fight like heck to save my Dad until he tossed her off. The dog was laid up for a couple a few days. Dad did not say how many times he got stung but he drove the dozer out of it.

I wonder if you should make sure that everything inside it is dead first. I would think if you microwaved it for a little while that would do the trick.

Bald Faced Hornet nest- If it’s fully intact and you want to save, cool night at dusk just put a drum liner or hefty bag over it, duct tape the bag opening to the limb and cut it off.

I sell 'em at shows and rendezvous for $20-$50 apiece. Insert into large plastic bag, spray with Raid, seal up and set aside.

I keep a pole vault pole and crossbar in the boat, both fiberglass, a roll of duct tape and a small woodsaw. That way I can insert the crossbar into the polevault pole, duct tape at the right length to reach the nest, then duct tape the saw onto the end. Takes just a bit of sawing for the nest to let go.

Tricky part is determining whether or not the nest is active when you're about to catch it. If active, I'll leave it on the ground and come back the next trap check period and take it.

Polevault poles also make good carp spears. Lightweight and they float.

Muskrat,
I like that technique, I also try to take them down before too many hard freezes or the woodpeckers declare war on the nest.

I coached shot & disc for many years, and was always receptive to "getting rid of" old pole vault poles and crossbars. Very light weight and strong.

Check with your local high school track coach to see when they're going to retire their next one.

I also hang Christmas ornaments on our big spruce tree out front with this set up, and the locals are always wondering how I get 'em up there so high!

Your question was how cold and what to treat the hive with. How cold would it have to be to keep you from protecting your front door? If there are hundreds of hornets in the nest they keep the interior warm enough to move around and protect the hive. They just won't fly far from it. At night in the cold the only difference is you won't see the ones that sting you if you get close and handle the hive.

Some wasp and hornet spray that sprays 20 feet, sprayed directly into the entrance, will kill a bunch of them. A few of those treatments and if they are not all dead, the few that are left will die of cold if it gets 15 or so degrees. Put the nest in a bag with a dose of insect spray and tie it closed. Leave it outdoors for a week or so to be sure.
Some people seem to be immune to the stings. They are no worse than a mosquito bite. i'm not one of those lucky people. I swell up and itch for two weeks, so I take no chances with them.

Wasps and hornets are not honey bees. Wasps and hornets attack and kill honey bees at the hive. I'd ask that you reconsider giving them a pass. There's likely a local bee keeper that has issues with them.

FCOL at the ignorance.

Life cycle of the bald faced is that the colony dies each year at the first good hard freeze. Only the mated daughter foundresses (queen) overwinter and they do so away from the parent nest. At this time of year there's no need to treat it. Just wait until after the first hard freeze to remove it.
