When radio personalities found out how much profit could be made by constantly whining about politicals parties and how easily so many of their listeners could be turn into devote followers, many Americans joined up like sports fans who believe all their team does is right and anything done by the other team needs punished. A working sap pays fed. tax, state tax, social security tax, sales tax, property tax, gas tax, vehicle licensing tax, tax on more I can't think of. A sap ends up giving up at least 50% of his money to taxes....then there's the insurance.
A socialist bum is supported by the sap trying to do the right thing and work for a living. If Socialism does get a majority toehold, there will be no incentive for a man to keep working. That's when everything collapses. But fools can't see it, or don't want to see it.
You know how hard it is to go back to work after a 30 minute break, harder after a weekend off, even harder after a week vacation. I have several relatives that are seniors on social security.

it should have stayed for seniors who paid into the system only.

congress should have never been able to steal from it.

it does help a lot of seniors , the issue is that congress stole from it with very little difference from organized crime stealing form Union pension funds they should be in the same prison.

A state run pension fund that is for people who paid in to have a retirement and leave the work force at 62 or 65 isn't the issue it is all the other things they awarded the "benefit" to that shouldn't have come from that fund.

For all that hate SS why not talk with your tax practitioner, there are ways to get paid wages and not pay into SS. Just remember you won't get any either, but for those that don't like it there are options. I did prepare taxes for two persons who opted out of SS. Both have had significant financial setbacks so the money they saved not paying SS was not utilized wisely.

Interview some people living in poverty or welfare. Many of them weren't savers and spent money faster than they could make it. Some lost it from bad investments. SS may not be the answer, but it's something. I am familiar with some whose only income is SS. I'm not pro-government, but in this case for some, it's a good thing. However, there's no doubt that when in comes to the government and SS funds, the government is guilty of misappropriation big time.

Because the government knows what's best for you. Or, at least they think they do. If they didn't force people to contribute to SS, they know many people would opt out. This would reduce the money available to those in need. I agree with you on the irresponsible, but not on those who are legitimately poor. Here's what I perceive as the biggest problem with SS:

The biggest problem with SS is misappropriation of funds by the government. Originally, SS was designed to do two things. Pay benefits to a worker if they were disabled. Or, provide retirement income to a worker who lives to retirement.

If they had followed the original intent, SS would be a much better program than it is now. But, thanks to the government, they kept finding ways to add addendums that found other ways to spend SS income. If lawmakers were good stewards of our money, they could have found safe ways to invest our SS money instead of looking for more ways to spend it.

Income money burns a hole in their pocket. They can't resist spending it. So many of them seem to have their little pet programs that they've either been lobbied for or it's something personal.

An example: In MN when the lottery started the income from it was to go for the environment. About 3 years later I asked a legislator who was on a board with me, how much money has gone to the environment so far from the lottery sales? His answer was, "I'm ashamed to admit it, but none. So many legislators saw all this money coming in. They couldn't keep their hands off it and it was spent for all their little pet projects."

I believe the same thing has happened with SS over the years.
