Made it through another opening weekend. Felt good to be back out in the marsh. Not one other trapper out. I went out at midnight and was back in bed by 4am. Around 9:30 my younger daughter and I set some traps at a farm pond where we picked up our first rat of the year! She was standing on the bank, handing me traps and stakes as needed. I placed a bodygrip in a bank den and was staking the trap as it swam through. Ive had that happen many times but never with someone that got so excited! Had a good time. Now to grab the bow and see what happen.

Got 35 sets in on Saturday, checked yesterday and picked 11 rats and one toenail. Had to pull 2 of my sets as they were on a free floating hut and were getting tested by the wind. Seems like fewer huts than last year, but only set 1/2 the area I normally do because I wanted to give some duck hunters plenty of space. Will move my traps after a couple more checks to the other part of the bay.

I know there's only 9 in the pic, I picked up 2 more from a colony trap I checked on my way out.

Way to go CableAble, I always look forward to your big catches.

I only picked up 6 more today, but the water level went down a foot overnight, so I think they were holed up.

Two of the rats I caught today were the smallest I've ever seen. Not much bigger than a 12 oz soda can. They might go straight in the freezer for predator bait, I would have to put them up on a mink board!

Nice to meet you CableAble. After I talked to you Wednesday AM we had a change of mind with the nice weather and we pulled the 41 sets we had out Tuesday b4 the rain and we got 14 rats. We headed north and we put out 200 sets Wednesday. Our plan is to check Thursday, move some sets and check and pull Friday. Several guys were pulling out today. Nice to see the rig you use, saves on the shoulders!!!

Our first 3 days were in a different area and we picked up 95 rats in two checks.
Bryce

I'm not checking traps on Halloween anymore! Fought the wind and only picked up 6 rats on a two day soak, one of which was partially eaten, and a coon and two incidentals. Bad juju for sure, just glad I didn't tip the canoe!
