Hope for all of our sake this ballot fails, but sure seems like a lot of "vote yes" signs around. It's in the best interest of all outdoors people to vote "no" on this. There is a good article about it on "Must Read Alaska"'s web site.

Do you have a link to the article?

Also, what are some pros and cons? I have been a little confused by what I have heard/read. Some say that it will negatively affect subsistence fishing and others say it will not.

bfisch, I'm sure I do, but I don't know how to post "links". Just do a search for "Must Read Alaska", go to their home page and scroll down to "Columns", and you'll see the article there, "Ballot measure 1 will kill off-road access as we know it" is the name of it.

The MRA article only talks of water routes, but I read the proposal itself a few days ago and in it they also insinuated that the restrictions could be applied to activity taking place in "riparian" areas, not just stream crossings. And, it's not just mining, oil production, or major construction projects that would be affected. Access for hunting, trapping, fishing and even hiking or bicycling could or would fall under these regulations.

Locally speaking, If there is a salmon problem its occurring in salt water, and has nothing to do with our fresh water streams.

Thanks for the link! My thoughts after reading the article are, "Moose, bear, beaver, etc. affect these waters way more than we do, but of course they would categorize that as natural and not human disturbance." If it is frozen are you still disturbing it? Do you have a link to the proposal? I clearly see the cons of the proposal, but trying to be objective, what are some pros?

The ballot also includes "wildlife" and "wildlife habitat". If you think getting a trapline cabin is hard now, wait and see how hard it will be to get one if this passes. Furthermore the restrictions could be imposed on make trapline trails along fish streams. If this group's real intention was to protect salmon and salmon habitat for the future, why were they not at the last board of fish meeting, when the BOF was discussing the dumping of millions of hatchery raised pink salmon into the ocean? This ballot was spawned in response to a court ruling that did not favor this group to stop Pebble Mine. Vote NO. No good will come about the passage of this ballot and will ultimately hurt Alaska development and trappers.

Life is hard. It's even harder if your stupid!

Spek...Thanks for posting about this. I was reluctant to do so because of the "no politics" policy.
As a life long family placer miner in Alaska, if this measure passes it will be devastating to the few
of us family operations left!
I urge all my fellow Alaskans to vote NO on ballot measure 1.
Too many folks will be thrown under the bus in the name of trying to stop Pebble at any cost.

Sure seems there is not much (any) positive about this proposal! I am thinking no is the way to go!

Also words in water temperature. Way too broad. A big “No” here, as well.

Thanks everyone, and especially for the web links so people can do their own research.

Chickenminer, I understand completely, and I hesitated myself to say anything. But I think in the long run this issue will have to much impact on Alaska trappers in a negative way.

No good will come about the passage of this ballot and will ultimately hurt Alaska development and trappers.

That’s exactly it. I’m no fan of Pebble Mine, but trying to stop it by passing a statewide law that cripples every industry and recreation is NOT the way to go. And honestly it doesn’t earn the anti-pebble people any respect from me.

So you’re voting for something you haven’t read because someone else told you to? Sounds like most of the Yes crowd...
