Some years ago, I read a true story written by a man's daughter. This is my very condensed version of that story.
The father moved in with his daughter. She had hoped living with her would improve his outlook on life. But, it seems as her father aged he had become an increasingly, more difficult, angry man. She began to pray for him constantly asking God to send him something to take away his anger, put some happiness in his life. Everything she tried was in vain.
Someone suggested she get him a companion. What about a dog? Anything was worth a try. So, she went to the local pound and looked at numerous dogs. She passed kennel after kennel looking at various dogs. The last kennel held a skinny, sad looking pointer. For some unknown reason she seemed drawn to the animal. She asked what the deal was on this one?
"Oh, we don't know anything about him, just showed up one day. Nobody ever claimed him. We've had him two weeks now. His time is up tomorrow."
"Then what?" She asked.
"We'll have to put him down."
The dog looked so sad. She couldn't bear the thought of him being killed. She took the dog.
When she returned home she presented the dog to her father. He got angry. "What makes you think I wanted a dog? If I had wanted one I would have gotten one myself and it sure wouldn't have been a bag of bones like this one."
He started angrily to walk away. The dog jerked away from the daughter's grasp and ran after her father causing him to stop. The dog sat down in front of him and put his paw up. Confusion replaced the anger in the man's eyes. For about a minute he stared at the animal. His eyes full of tears, he dropped to his knees and hugged the pointer.
He named the dog Cheyenne. They went everywhere together. The man started going to church on Sunday with Cheyenne laying at his feet. They explored the town, went fishing on the riverbank, played cards, and made many friends. Every night when the man went to bed, there was Cheyenne laying on his rug alongside.
This friendship lasted several years. Then one night the daughter was startled awake by the dog. She went into her father's room to find that he had passed away in his sleep. A couple days later, the daughter found Cheyenne dead lying on his rug beside her father's bed. She buried him wrapped in the rug he always slept on. Cheyenne was gone. His work was done.
Hebrews 31:2 "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it."
Isn't God something!

Brought tears to my eyes, reminded me of my own story. One day my wife and daughter came through the door dragging this pooch. After we lost the last one we said no more dogs, but they had seen this "rescue dog" wagging his tail and brought him home. The dog and I became best friends, we went everywhere together. He loved riding in the truck with me and running like the wind in the woods. However, the rescue dog people never told us of his past and he had a number of quirks indicating he had been abused. To this day I don't support the rescue dog program. One day the dog was sleeping near the stove, a friend came bursting through the door without knocking, and the dog bit him before I could stop him. As a result I had to put the dog down, best friend I ever had.I don't know if there is a Heaven for dogs, but if there is I hope he's there having a good time.

Fisherman I don't understand putting the dog down it sounds like he was protecting you as he was suppose to do.

Brought tears to my eyes too, Fisherman. The fact that it's true makes it even more meaningful.

Wamp,
Because it was a dog bite we had to report it. The dog had been vaccinated against rabies and without question he was protecting me. The problem was that his past was unknown, he had obviously been abused, was overly protective of me to the point that we could not trust him around my grandchildren and in laws.He was obsessed with me to the point of him pushing between me and a grandchild. The simple fact was that we just could not trust him around the kids and other family members. The bite was the final straw. It was very hard, could not give him away under the circumstances. I wish that it were me rather than him that got put down.I know he was only a dog, but he was my best friend.

Fisherman I understand when the grandchildern are at risk of being bit by over protective dog. You made the right decision and I would have done the same, hard but had to be done.
