So its completely my fault that I now have a dirt hole wise coyote digging up and exposing traps at dirt holes on one of the properties I trap and now I'm trying to figure out how to catch it. It's definitely a coyote due to the tracks it leaves and trench it will dig to get out the bait after it finds the trap. I never re-checked pan tension after waxing some of my MB650's and they must have been around 10 lbs and it found every trap and exposed it or tipped it out of its bed a little.

What are some of your favorite sets to catch dirt hole wise coyotes? I would just put a trap where it stands while it tears up my set, but it hasn't consistently came in to mess things up from a specific direction. I was thinking of a compass set, or some sort of walk through without dirtholes (gland lure on one side, urine on the other).

Any other ideas?

Snares usually get any diggers for me, usually I can set some.
A subtle urine post set will work, try to find a urine spot on the ground, pick it up with trowel and put it where you need it for post set

A trap with ten pounds of pan should not have drawn his attention! It is likely that trap was not bedded as good as it should have been . If he did not fire the trap , set the pan at 4# and re set it. That coyote does not know what it dug up, it’s just a hunk of something that’s in his way while trying to get to the good stuff ! If it makes you feel better bed a trap firmly back about a foot and blend it well . The compass set about 40’ away is always a good idea, or a post set or grab and die or ........

I've solved problem diggers with a post hole set. I dig a big vertical hole with little to no backing (like a post hole) and bed a trap in front of the hole without blending it in so the trap bed stands out then on the opposite side of the hole I bed another trap and blend it in best I can.

If he is digging traps,he isn't very wise.I would add a second trap and catch him right there. You already have him coming in.

Put a compass set in 10 feet away. Blend it in like a blind set, pick up coyote in the morning

Inconspicuous trail-side set with 2 or 3 droppings and nothing else as attractors.

Add one or two more lightly baited / lured holes around the trap. They can only count to one.

Another option is to very discreetly bed a trap back at least a foot as sort of a blind set. Sorry, Taximan already said that.

I like the idea suggested for a urine post close by. Or add a very well blended flat set. Both should be upwind from the original set. Attention is focused already, so catch it off guard.

Unless the digger is a livestock killer, I wouldn't bother trying to target it. Catch his ignorant brother or sister in that set.

How will you ever know if YOU get him anyway. Bring a scoop of dirt from a catch in another area

look where he is standing digging the trap out and put a well bedding clean trap there and blend back at close to original as possible and put other trap back in the bed and bait as normal works every time

Do what Taxi said.

Also put the second trap where he stands while digging at your original trap.

Find a trail/trails with limited options and blind set it near a set that he's digging up, they say forget about it and just move on but I can't do that myself as the reward of getting that wise K-9 is a memory you won't forget!

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Ya I don't like it if I get a digger, I too want to take them out, it's fun if I snare one or so and the digging stops
