The wife and I have recently purchased some land between Fort Davis and Alpine TX, and are planning to build a house and relocate there in the future.
I was wondering if anyone here has had any hunting or trapping experiences in the area? I understand there are bobcats, mountain lions, and yotes there, any info concerning this area would be appreciated.
thanks, bacatrapper

Thanks for the info paloduro, much obliged. As green horney as I am, those hills just say cat, in the davis mountains. Being able to use footholds will be a plus. I been collecting jakes for years, its time to put em to use. I must say however, driving a stake down there in those rocks looks like a tall order.
@ Todd, you wouldnt believe it man, youd have to see it. Our place is at 5100' elev, the neighbor is a longtime resident and weather bug, 85ish in summer, 20's in the winter. more moisture per yr than baca county colorado, at 18-21 inches. We have been vacationing there for 6 years, and have good contacts and some friends. The only drawback I can see is the border 115 miles away. I am used to having crappy hides to bring to market, I might as well go where its warmer and catch the same junk.
Its time for a change. Well be selling the farm, cows, all the grass, equipment etc, and turning over a new leaf. 3-5 years timeline. I got a new job managing a grain, co, so no trapping this yr, but im making 5k a month so thats ok. Gotta pile up the cashish for the stashish.
best regards, jason

I think you are going to like Texas very much. The main thing that you will noticed is that you are not pestered by a bunch of rules, like some of the other states. It's nice to shoot out of your back yard, trap year round, if you want or need to. Walking around or driving around with a gun is no big deal. There is plenty of Lion, Bobcat and coons, but the biggest pain in the neck, like most other places is coyotes. I also like Jake's and you can use drags, but I mostly use Super Stakes and they work real good. Some people charge for trapping, but I just try to teach the ranchers how to do it themselves. I will set the traps with them watching and they check them, it does not take long and their hooked. I also help or just order what they need for trapping. Be very carful if you are using snares. There is some high fences in that area, but not like South Texas, where snares work real good, when they dig under the fences. The border is not a problem. Welcome.
