just leave clean skunk fat (no meat) in a glass jar. it will make its own oil.

Went to a fur trapping clinic with the kids in Deer lodge a few years ago. There was an older man in his 80s that used it on his boots as dressing. He claimed he couldn't smell it, but my daughter certainly could!

mine has no skunk smell at all. remove the pods before you pull the hide. then take the fat. fat on the pelt too.

I never saw where skunk oil alone attracted anything.
I use it as a solvent for civet paste. lots of folks use extra virgin olive oil. its a good gun oil for your muzzle loader if you want to be traditional. makes a good wood finish also. rub it in by hand like boiled linseed oil. I like it for self bows. don't need to do anything to it just rub it on. some lure makers will buy or trade for it.

ive never tried sun rendering skunk fat with meat chunks still attached! I got a old skillet on my wood stove I toss them in and make skunk cracklins. and yes they work good. I fry them up and put in gallon bags and freeze till I get enough usable products. Think i'll try bobs method next. I designate 3 gallon glass jars for clean skunk fat every season

Skunk fat, otter glands, mink musk, castor, and bobcat meat makes for a killer coyote bait imo. I spoke with a guy yesterday and he said the exact same thing is what he makes his bait with. Only problem is I don’t have any skunks in my area so I’m having a hard time getting skunk fat.

If pure the heat rendered skunk oil and fat is about taint free even at room temps, sun rendered skunk oil carries more of a slight tainted smell but nothing overpowering it remains stable in the jar. I consider the heat rendered a good natural base for lures/baits and the sun rendered a ingredient to add to lures and baits. Once the fat/grease settles out you have a paste base to work with that is somewhat freeze resistant in the fall.

Law Dog I take it you pour off the oil on top to separate the oil and fat/grease?
