Put some clean gravel in the bottom, a few inches. Then the post and some more clean gravel around the bottom 6". Then dry concrete mix.

I would use hedge posts if at all possible. If you use treated posts you could cut a piece of heavy plastic to cover the bottom of the post before you place it in the hole and then duct tape the top of the plastic to the post.

1st, did you hit some type of water line? If you don't address the water issue it doesn't matter what you use rust or rot will destroy the post.

Lol thanks for the ideas guys! I’m a simple hobby farmer working on a budget. Some of these ideas sound very smart and engineered. Prob why construction costs so much.
I think I’ll throw a few handfuls of gravel down first then pack it in with the sand and dirt that came out. I appreciate the advice!

The better treated posts are rated for thirty years ground contact. It doesn't matter if they're in water or not, they are not going to rot for a long time. Just plant them!

Eh...wot?

You could also just use some concrete pier blocks with steel, adjustable post bases. No need for holes. Cheap too.

At my old house on the NC Outer Banks, all homes were built on 8x8 posts to get them above FEMA flood line. None used concrete. Our soil was sand on top, then about 6 feet of muck, the sand again. It was important to go through the muck layer to avoid settling issues.

I suppose if you aren't dealing with frost, you could do anything you want. We have building codes here that would not allow for a structure to be built like that because it would shift constantly and look all helter skelter.

Have at er.

I’m going to post a picture of the shelter once it’s finished. No need for building permits or inspections here, cripes!
