I went deer hunting with my dad for 40 years. He quit deer hunting and then a couple of years later he died. I went for a couple of years after he died but I haven't been deer hunting for a few years now.

That might have been disappointing for him if knew that would happen before he passed. It just was not the same without dad there. Hard to describe, but a lot of the fun of the hunt was gone when he wasn't there.

The same for lots of us, those were the years that memory's were made! I have some tremendous memories of hunting with my father. 40 years of deer hunting and many years earlier of squirrel, pheasant and rabbit hunting.

You are not alone with those feelings. My father passed 9 years ago, and it's been the same situation for me. I still trap and hunt occasionally, the the joy of shared times is certainly missed.I have stepsons now, they have no interest in trapping or hunting. If they did, I would probably enjoy sharing with them.

I guess I have been, in a way, lucky.
I lost my dad 2 years ago. He hadn't deer hunted, or hunted anything really, for several years. He would always call me though to see how I did. The memories of our time together are great.
Where I was lucky though is that Dad and I both taught my sons how to hunt, trap and fish. So although one passed, I still have two to share the times with.
A lot of the stories we share at every deer camp are about 'Papa". My oldest really gets a kick out of some of things Dad did. He always says, " I don't know if papa was the best shot I ever seen, or the luckiest".
I will always go with the best.
