I have always loved this time of year, trapping and all kinds of hunting. While I still love all of the above, since Dad died 18 years ago,it just isn't the same. Great memories to recall and excitement for things to come. But,every so often,a flood of emotions come rushing back. I am sure I am not alone.
Tight chains and big bucks for all!

Me too. I lost my son two years ago September. We used to have as much fun getting ready as we did trapping. Now it seems to be a burden to get things ready.... But I still try.

I went deer hunting with my dad for 40 years. He quit deer hunting and then a couple of years later he died. I went for a couple of years after he died but I haven't been deer hunting for a few years now.

That might have been disappointing for him if knew that would happen before he passed.

It just was not the same without dad there. Hard to describe, but a lot of the fun of the hunt was gone when he wasn't there.

I have some tremendous memories of hunting with my father. 40 years of deer hunting and many years earlier of squirrel, pheasant and rabbit hunting.

You are not alone with those feelings. My father passed 9 years ago, and it's been the same situation for me. I still trap and hunt occasionally, the the joy of shared times is certainly missed.I have stepsons now, they have no interest in trapping or hunting. If they did, I would probably enjoy sharing with them.

I look at the passing of a mentor differently. I innately, without any forethought, assume the role of the deceased (my grandfather in my case). I continue on with the same vigor as he had and use all of the wisdom which he passed on to me.
Whether I have sat in a tree for no apparent reason, not seeing even one bird or a squirrel, or make a kill, I look up to the skies and smile thinking about my grandfather. I also do my best to pass on his knowledge on to the younger generation.
In a way, he did not die, he is still alive inside me. It is now up to me to see that he stays "alive" for the next generation.

I guess I have been, in a way, lucky.

I lost my dad 2 years ago. He hadn't deer hunted, or hunted anything really, for several years. He would always call me though to see how I did. The memories of our time together are great.

Where I was lucky though is that Dad and I both taught my sons how to hunt, trap and fish. So although one passed, I still have two to share the times with.

A lot of the stories we share at every deer camp are about 'Papa". My oldest really gets a kick out of some of things Dad did. He always says, " I don't know if papa was the best shot I ever seen, or the luckiest".

I will always go with the best.

I am with you guys I lost my best friend my Dad in 1999. We done everything together fished, hunted, trapped and worked together. He taught me so much about life. When I was young he would take me squirrel hunting with him being small you get bored so he had a game he played with me. Not even did i give it a thought he was teaching me. The game went listen to the birds as they sing, as I listened he would say find the bird in the trees and I would then he would tell me what kind of bird it was. I still do that today and know most of the birds by sound. My wife always asks me what kind of bird is that making that noise. I always teach her just like Dad taught me.
He would also stop at trees and show me the bark and the leaves and tell me what kind of tree it was.
I still trap some of the areas we trapped when I was young and can tell you and show you where we caught coon, mink, rats, etc. on the river and all memories come flooding back.
We may have lost them but there ways and memories are still alive in our mind and hearts.
