Hello. My goal is to eventually get a deer here in MO with every legal method. This AM I got one with a crossbow which I thought I would end up using this weekend during the rifle season. Next is getting one with a shotgun. I of course have very little time to get this set up. What I was originally going to do was get an slug barrel with iron sights but do not have time. I am not sure what I want to use will work so let me know. Gun: Mossberg 500 Bantam 20 gauge turkey gun full choke. I would like to just buy slugs, keep shots under 50 yards, and use the true glo iron style sights. What choke do I need? Type of slugs? Any other thoughts on the barrel/choke/slugs? Thank you for your time.
my sons mosberg 500c 20ga shot shoots slugs fine as did my 500c 20ga , I would recommend if you have the ability to change chokes use IC and see how it shoots , maybe a mod if you want to squeeze it down just a hair I have on occasionally seen s slight increase in accuracy and no ill effect. a full or tighter is a lot of stress on the barrel and choke but in a fixed choke WInchester superX rifled slugs have not caused any damage and shoot decent.
my advice is go buy a 15 pack of the 20gh 2 3/4 Winchester superX slugs they have shot the best out of the most slug guns for us , I have been hunting slug gun zone for 28 years now almost all of the family use smooth bore slug guns and they do just fine to 50 yards on deer.
when I was a kid my dad always used Remington slugs because they were always on the shelf but when I was 16 a friend who I gave rides home gave me a few boxes of the Winchesters and they shot better from my Rem 1100 been buying them ever since and they have continued to be the best slug in several guns.
first to try WIn super X , second Federal truball third rem slugger. try an stick to the 5/8 oz weight is energy down range and range before it drops sub sonic the speed is nearly the same 1/2=218gr or 5/8 =273gr the additional 55gr is more yards above the speed of sound and they are usually the same price
I have shot Winchester 12ga slugs 1 oz to 100 yards but about 110 they fall apart but the lighter 20ga slugs 75 seems to be were thy fall apart accuracy wise.
I have shot the 12ga in strong wind and they fell apart about 15-20yrds sooner for accuracy I could make hits on 2 liter bottles at 75 but not at 100 yards
they are drag stabilized and not spin stabilized and they are dropping sub sonic about 100 yards , the 20ga drop sub sonic about 75
foster slugs are basically a flying lead thimble being hollow they push a lot more air than normal bullets or sabotted slugs so they slow down much sooner
