I'll be picking up about 100 Victor 3N double long springs in a couple of weeks, and have been thinking about the fastest way to give them miles trigger notches. I usually use paws-i-trip pans on the DLS's, but my dad used these traps for 25 years and I would like to keep them original for nostalgias sake. I do prefer having some pan tension though, and have used the miles trigger before. I have a Dremel, files, grinder, and an air compressor that could run an air file if I bought one. Anybody have a good system for doing this?

I've never had to do a 100 at one time I just do them when I get them at most 12 to 15 at one sitting..I use all hand files seems to work better for me..get a buddy and one notch the dogs and the other notch the pans What types/sizes of files do you like? I've seen it done with triangular saw files and small flat files.

5" or 6" Dbl X slim for filing 10-12 point handsaw is what I use, like this https://www.woodcraft.com/products/double-extra-slim-taper-file-5on the pan, But, I don't notch the dog, I under bevel it with a flat file and bend it up just at the end so that it engages the pan notch, easier for me to do and it seems to last longer.

Dog notches can be made with a chisel if you are careful. Might want to practice on a piece of scrap metal first.

To file pan notches, consider taking pans off and clamping them in a vise. If you do that, also check for any pan wobble resulting from loose fitting pan bolts. Paul sells #10 pan bolts for which you would need a drill press to re-size pan bolt holes. Good suggestion about the chisel, hadn't thought about that, I have a bunch of leftover dogs to practice on from putting pit pans on. Unfortunately the 3N doesn't have a bolt, wobble pans.

How did you dad use them? The old gov't guys set them full notch and with a wire screen pan cover and 1/2 to 3/4" of dirt covering you have enough tension. Wiorked for me and Craig O'Gorman from whom I learned how to use them back in the mid 1970's.

You might try using a variable speed saber saw with fine toothed metal cutting blades. Saw blades break; use of protective gear suggested.
I guess I meant jig saw.
