Hey folks, I’ve been planning a trip out to South Dakota with some family of mine for a predator hunt over our Christmas break. (We’re all college students) I go to school in Brookings and love it. Anyways, we’ve been thinking about western South Dakota to get on some yoties. We’re looking to hunt for a few days so not worried about putting on some miles. We’re also not scared to walk far either, we’re young yet. There’s gonna be three of us- not pros by any means but we respect the land and know our way around in the woods. Any of you guys recommend some locations of where to go or not to go? Also, we really don’t care where we hunt just as long as we have some fun and hopefully see some fur. Not asking for your honey hole, but any info on making our trip more successful would be appreciated!
Thanks, Gage

Look up the Fort Pierre and Buffalo Gap National Grasslands that might be your best bet just get hold of a map as it mixes in with private ground but most folks won't care if your killing yotes out that way most likely. More land then you can hunt out that way most gates are marked. I'd hunt the edge of the Badlands but make sure you know where your at don't want to go on Federal ground.

The Black Hills National Forest gets a lot of traffic even in the winter hard to find a place in the winter without vehicle tracks already there.

Have you picked up a hunting atlas? They should have them about anywhere you can buy a license. I find them very handy for finding public land. If you are going west river there are some places that have a lot of public land available to hunt.

Thanks for the info guys, we’ve been thinking about the badlands too. I also use the SD dnr website to find public land, but would like to get on some more virgin-private land. I figure we will end up knocking on some doors too.

Knock and talk to ranchers with rivers or major drainages will be your best bet, everyone and their kid has a foxpro and likes to coyote hunt in western sd. There are also tons of coyote tournaments so don’t plan your trip in an area with one of those at the same time or you will be sorely disappointed. I have even heard of land being leased for coyote hunting in parts west river. Good luck.

Knocking on doors west river is not like knocking on doors for ducks and geese out east. fair warning. idk why it is, but as a rule, west river folks can be flat hostile about hunters coming up to their homes. especially in stanley, haakon, and jones county. but, weve been raising and selling bulls to them and their dads and grandfathers since 47, so we could probably get you on some good ground

Virgin unhunted ground may be out there but most of it has been at least traveled over by a vehicle with a gun onboard. Coyotes over 1 year old know full well what a truck means. Some very experienced guys know how and where they can hunt tight to the vehicle however most do not use enough shoe leather.

It's also windier country out there, the wind can be your friend if you use it right.

Get the Walk-in maps, lot of private land leased to the state for hunting. Also along side of the Missouri River the whole length I believe.

Yes that Corp of Engineers "Take ground" along the Missouri River is public to a certain elevation they have orange markers along the way!

But you have to have the ability to access it. A limited number of public roads get down to the take land. I got refused to cross less than 200 meters of private ground in your county Law Dog to reach public take land. Then again, maybe they wanted fewer eyes watching their for-pay goose and pheassy hunting operation. Of course, the CO was no where to be found to actually settle the situation...

Seeing how they are not allowed to run paid hunts on public ground they maybe did not want you around the best access is by boat to avoid the access issues. We hunted deer like that in past years just go back to the far end and let the other push to you. LOL

The comment about the foxpro is no joke. I know a guy from pierre area who refuses to use a fox pro in tournaments-he uses a couple different “off brands” because the dogs have heard the fox pro rabbit calls a time or 17. He shoots a lot of coyotes. Dont forget the hand calls, especially for vocals.
